The commune has more or less <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/powersource.post-gazette.com\/powersource\/companies\/2015\/12\/13\/The-palace-that-gas-rebuilt\/stories\/201512130100\" >welcomed<\/a> gas leases as a means to repair its crumbling infrastructure and start new projects, and has reportedly netted more than $4.3 million in royalties.<\/p>\n<p>While the religious organization signed leases in 2010 and 2014 to sell the natural gas under its properties, according to its federal lawsuit filed at U.S. District Court in Wheeling on Tuesday, those leases do not allow for any surface disturbances and blocks off sacred areas from outside intrusion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_89074\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hare-Krishna-New-Vrndavan-west-virginia2.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89074\" class=\"wp-image-89074\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hare-Krishna-New-Vrndavan-west-virginia2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hare-Krishna-New-Vrndavan-west-virginia2.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hare-Krishna-New-Vrndavan-west-virginia2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-89074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A lake on the sacred property of New Vrindaban in West Virginia.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/powersource.post-gazette.com\/local\/region\/2017\/03\/02\/Rover-gas-pipeline-raises-freedom-of-religion-issue-Moundsville-West-Virginia-New-Vrindaban-Hare-Krishna\/stories\/201703020053\" >Pittsburgh Post-Gazette<\/a> reports that the lawsuit seeks to block Rover&#8217;s legal request for immediate access and possession of the pipeline pathway through two of the community&#8217;s seven sacred temples. Energy Transfer Partners wants to build the pipeline on a permanent 50-foot-wide right of way about 3,000 feet long on the two properties, offering property owners $7,000.<\/p>\n<p>But the complaint states that the project infringes on religious freedom as it &#8220;seeks to take a non-metaphorical bulldozer through the Vrindaban Parties&#8217; property, and in turn, through their most sincerely held holy sites.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also argues that Rover cannot meet the legal burden of demonstrating a compelling governmental interest building the pipeline through New Vrindaban&#8217;s holy grounds, according to the Post-Gazette.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Transfer Partners&#8217; 713-mile Rover Pipeline will run from West Virginia, eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania into Michigan and eventually Canada. The $4.2 billion pipeline is designed to transport 3.25 billion cubic feet of domestically produced natural gas per day.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_89075\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Energy-Transfer-Partners-Rover-Pipeline-West-Virginia-dapl-hare-krishna.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89075\" class=\"wp-image-89075\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Energy-Transfer-Partners-Rover-Pipeline-West-Virginia-dapl-hare-krishna.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Energy-Transfer-Partners-Rover-Pipeline-West-Virginia-dapl-hare-krishna.png 902w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Energy-Transfer-Partners-Rover-Pipeline-West-Virginia-dapl-hare-krishna-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Energy-Transfer-Partners-Rover-Pipeline-West-Virginia-dapl-hare-krishna-768x490.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-89075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Energy Transfer Partners<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved the pipeline&#8217;s construction last month, thereby allowing the company to file eminent domain lawsuits to seize property from owners even if they are unwilling.<\/p>\n<p>But as Gabriel Fried, an executive agent and board member in the Krishna community, told the Post-Gazette, &#8220;These are sacrosanct properties.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our goal is to protect these properties,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;We&#8217;re not trying to stop the pipeline or progress. We&#8217;re amenable to finding a route we and the company can be happy with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A court hearing over the Krishna lawsuit will take place on Thursday in Wheeling.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/wtrf7news\/posts\/10154372044876914<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are not here to stop the Rover Pipeline company&#8217;s pipeline, rather we&#8217;d like to come to an understanding that our sacred spaces are not harmed,&#8221; Vrindavan Das, the director of communications at ISKCON New Vrindaban, told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yourohiovalley.com\/story\/34640916\/peaceful-conflict-brews-over-sacred-ground?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook_WTRF_7News\" >7News<\/a>. &#8220;That would be very disturbing to our residents and pilgrims.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The New Vrindaban community is not alone in opposing the interstate pipeline. Fifty-eight property owners in Michigan have been affected by an eminent domain lawsuit filed in federal court by Energy Transfer Rover Pipeline earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They want to build an access road through our property, but we have not agreed to that yet,&#8221; Marion Township resident William Atkinson told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2017\/02\/27\/michigan-pipeline-route-eminent-domain\/98484502\/\" >Livingston Daily<\/a>. &#8220;I&#8217;m not happy about eminent domain.
