Photo credit: Flickr<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>21 Mar 2017 &#8211; <\/em>While the U.S. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/congressional-review-act-2233094766.html\" >makes it easier<\/a> for coal companies to dump mining waste into streams and waterways, other countries are acknowledging the importance of water and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/new-zealand-whanganui-river-2315449092.html\" >granting personhood<\/a> to these precious resources.<\/p>\n<p>The High Court of the Indian state of Uttarakhand ruled that the Ganges and Yamuna rivers and their tributaries are &#8220;legal and living entities having the status of a legal person with all corresponding rights, duties and liabilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The decision marks the first time a court has recognized a non-human as a living entity in India.<\/p>\n<p>Judges Rajeev Sharma and Alok Singh <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/river-ganga-named-indias-first-living-entity-court-names-parents-too-1671581\" >cited the example<\/a> of New Zealand&#8217;s Whanganui River, which became the first in the world to be granted the same legal rights as a person last week.<\/p>\n<p>The decision by New Zealand&#8217;s Parliament marked the end of the country&#8217;s longest-running court case, as the Whanganui Iwi have long fought for the recognition of their authority over the river and consider it &#8220;an indivisible and living whole.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">World&#39;s First River Given Legal Status as a Person <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cQqscoDqi4\" >https:\/\/t.co\/cQqscoDqi4<\/a> via <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EcoWatch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >@EcoWatch<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LJeUbX8QT8\" >pic.twitter.com\/LJeUbX8QT8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Climate Council (@climatecouncil) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/climatecouncil\/status\/843621886437310464?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >March 20, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the Ganges and Yamuna are considered sacred by the country&#8217;s majority Hindu population.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rivers are central to the existence of half of the Indian population and their health and well being,&#8221; the court said in its ruling. &#8220;They have provided both physical and spiritual sustenance to all of us from time immemorial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The rivers now have &#8220;legal parents,&#8221; or state officials who will be the human face of the rivers. But increasing urbanization and industrialization of one of the world&#8217;s fastest-growing economies have tarnished the waters. More than 1,500 million liters of raw sewage is discharged into the Ganges every day, along with 500 million liters of industrial waste, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Politics\/IwxheezmdiazU5mWtiWU2K\/Uttarakhand-HC-recognizes-Ganga-and-Yamuna-rivers-as-living.html\" >Live Mint<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>A 2016 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Politics\/IwxheezmdiazU5mWtiWU2K\/Uttarakhand-HC-recognizes-Ganga-and-Yamuna-rivers-as-living.html\" >NPR<\/a> report described the Yamuna, the main tributary of the Ganges, as the &#8220;dirtiest river in the country&#8221; and a &#8220;toxic cocktail of sewage, industrial waste and surface runoff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s governments have <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/india-water-lawmaking-idINKBN16S0ZB\" >spent billions<\/a> of dollars on efforts to clean the Ganges.
