Edward Munoz\/Reuters<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>11 Apr 2017 &#8211; <\/em>When people say share ownership is highly diversified, they think most large public corporations have lots of shareholders \u2013 and often the largest shareholder has less than 15%, sometimes less than 5%, of the total shareholdings.<\/p>\n<p>But looking at it this way obscures the concentration that is taking place. The same organisations \u2013 usually finance capital, rarely families or individuals \u2013 own these public companies. We (David and Georgina) first researched this in 2009, and we\u2019ve since found that the trend is of increasing concentration in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/14747731.2013.828965?journalCode=rglo20\" >several countries over three decades<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When one organisation alone controls more than 6% of shares in very large global corporations, and 30 control more than half of all shares in these corporations, that signifies very high concentration.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com.au\/books?id=QWcJ-ljDRWkC&amp;pg=PA213&amp;lpg=PA213&amp;dq=murray+scott+peetz+finance+capital&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=Oa9CbBZn2-&amp;sig=pwgkPdVFxzUuOtdQ2mW43hfw9ZI&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwic5qWYufTSAhUHEJAKHX6MASgQ6AEIMDAD#v=onepage&amp;q=murray%20scott%20peetz%20finance%20capital&amp;f=false\" >Our 2009 study<\/a> found that various forms of financial capital controlled the great majority (68.4%) of shares in the world\u2019s very large corporations.
