{"id":90735,"date":"2017-04-17T12:00:42","date_gmt":"2017-04-17T11:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=90735"},"modified":"2017-04-15T19:23:19","modified_gmt":"2017-04-15T18:23:19","slug":"warmongers-by-any-other-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2017\/04\/warmongers-by-any-other-name\/","title":{"rendered":"Warmongers by Any Other Name"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>11 Apr 2017 &#8211; <\/em>In the days followed the \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fall_of_Saigon\" >reunification<\/a>\u201d of Vietnam, among the many colorful anti-American invectives, somehow the term hi\u1ebfu chi\u1ebfn, or warmonger, has stuck in my mind.<\/p>\n<p>For those of us who grew up in South Vietnam, or \u201cfree Vietnam,\u201d we saw America as an ally that was there only to help contain and defeat the \u201cevil\u201d Communist North Vietnam. The United States of America represented freedom, open society, the country that gave us chewing gum, Coca-Cola, Rock &#8216;n&#8217; Roll, Elvis Presley and John Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>However, we never saw or understood U.S. foreign policy or how America used its military power in totality.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90736\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/vietnam-usa.jpeg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90736\" class=\"wp-image-90736\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/vietnam-usa.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/vietnam-usa.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/vietnam-usa-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/vietnam-usa-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-90736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cThe People Are United to Defeat American Invaders.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since 1965, the U.S. has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/prospect.org\/article\/some-context-our-upcoming-bombing-campaign\" >bombed or invaded<\/a> another country every 40 months. I\u2019ve witnessed America going to wars 11 times since I arrived in 1981. The smallest country America has invaded was the tiny Caribbean island nation of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Invasion_of_Grenada\" >Grenada<\/a>, population 89,000 (1980).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Williams makes about $10 million a year <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cE7gsQJgCI\" >https:\/\/t.co\/cE7gsQJgCI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tobita Chow (@tobitac) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tobitac\/status\/850531858123288576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >April 8, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>As a refugee who has been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@sonnylebythebay\/a-gift-from-my-mother-f09db49d425b\" >granted safe harbor and afforded the opportunities<\/a> otherwise he would not have, I was quick to defend bullets and bombs America unleashed on Vietnam, but as a war survivor, an American war essentially, I\u2019m horrified, sick to the stomach, by the gleeful and awestruck reaction of the U.S. media and the American public to death and destruction unleashed by America\u2019s war machine. It\u2019s beyond macabre.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. sent 27,000 soldiers, involving over 300 aircraft, killing more than 2,000 civilians in order to capture a CIA informant gone rogue.<\/p>\n<p>I finally got to see my new country flexing its military might in 1989. It was the invasion of Panama to capture the former CIA informant-turned dictator <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manuel_Noriega\" >Manuel Noriega<\/a>, called \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2014\/12\/our-forgotten-invasion-panama-key-understanding-us-foreign-policy-today\" >Operation Just Cause<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>American bombs and rockets raining down on Panama City, a dense capital city of nearly one million people, but American journalists and politicians were only concerned with whether that was enough to \u201cneutralize\u201d Panamanians loyal to Noriega. (US Department of Defense\/Wikimedia)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The next time I felt sick to my stomach again was the sights of American journalists <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/media\/opinion\/embedded-journalism-a-distorted-view-of-war-2141072.html\" >\u201cembedded\u201d<\/a> with the U.S. military, riding atop tanks during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It didn\u2019t look or feel like war that they were reporting. It was more like a patriotic pep rally, a rah-rah atmosphere punctuated by \u201cLet\u2019s go kick Saddam\u2019s ass!\u201d and \u201cSee you in Baghdad!\u201d Abandoning all semblance of objectivity, some American reporters acted like cheerleaders to boost U.S. troops\u2019 morale, marvelling in awe at the war machine\u2019s latest innovations, reciting their specs and killing capabilities like arms salesman.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90738\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/nbc-david-bloom-iraq-usa.jpeg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90738\" class=\"wp-image-90738\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/nbc-david-bloom-iraq-usa.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/nbc-david-bloom-iraq-usa.jpeg 474w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/nbc-david-bloom-iraq-usa-300x223.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-90738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NBC News correspondent David Bloom. Imagine it rolling down Main Street, USA.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Every U.S. president since WW II has been defined by war: Truman by Korea, Johnson by Vietnam and the two Bushes by Iraq invasion I and II, respectively. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Reagan?src=hash\" >Reagan<\/a> had the distinction of presiding over the invasion of the tiny <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Grenada?src=hash\" >Grenada<\/a> island in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>The press had all but written Donald J Trump off as the worst president, granted he\u2019s only three months into the job, then came the missile attack on Syria. Civilians are just collaterals in abstract, like things that get in the way.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been spending<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/14-million-hour-war-costs-top-16-trillion-911-say-congressional-researchers-1764816\" > $14 million an hour <\/a>to protect our interests since Sept 11, 2001, but clearly the bottom line of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/News_Photos\/Features\/Worlds-Top-5-arms-exporters\/fp\/3105\/\" >Military-Industrial Complex<\/a> takes precedence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/arms-exporters.jpeg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-90740\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/arms-exporters.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/arms-exporters.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/arms-exporters-300x175.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/arms-exporters-768x447.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>America\u2019s most ambitious war project to date, the \u201cGlobal War on Terrorism,\u201d which seems to have metastasized like Stage IV cancer, has only helped expand the Military-Industrial Complex\u2019s feeding trough.<\/p>\n<p>I came to America during <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@sonnylebythebay\/elections-dont-matter-institutions-do-why-i-m-voting-for-hillary-clinton-5ff87426a87\" >Ronald Reagan<\/a>\u2019s first year in office, who had been elected a landslide victory at the poll. Americans increasingly find ourselves at the receiving end of the U.S. military\u2019s firepower, especially ethnic minorities, immigrants, and Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally declaring \u201cNot In Our Name\u201d doesn\u2019t absolve our complicity and guilt.
