{"id":91941,"date":"2017-05-08T12:00:29","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T11:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=91941"},"modified":"2017-05-06T19:27:29","modified_gmt":"2017-05-06T18:27:29","slug":"germany-breaks-record-85-of-energy-comes-from-renewables-last-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2017\/05\/germany-breaks-record-85-of-energy-comes-from-renewables-last-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany Breaks Record: 85% of Energy Comes from Renewables Last Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>4 May 2017 &#8211; <\/em>Germany&#8217;s &#8220;Energiewende&#8221;\u2014the country&#8217;s low-carbon energy revolution\u2014turned <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/coal-mine-hydroelectric-2321724350.html\" >another<\/a> successful corner last weekend when <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/renewable-energy\/\" >renewable energy<\/a> sources nearly stamped out <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/coal\" >coal<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/nuclear\" >nuclear<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a particularly breezy and sunny Sunday, renewables such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/wind\" >wind<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/solar\" >solar<\/a>, along with some biomass and hydropower, peaked at a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.agora-energiewende.de\/de\/presse\/agoranews\/news-detail\/news\/ein-sonntag-fast-ohne-kohlestrom-1\/News\/detail\/\" >record 85 percent<\/a>, or 55.2 gigawatts, and even came along with negative prices for several hours at the electricity exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, coal use was at an all-time minimum. According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/renewable-energy-use-surges-in-germany-over-weekend\/a-38670834\" >DW<\/a>, on April 30, coal-fired power stations were only operational between 3 and 4 p.m. and produced less than eight gigawatts of energy, well below the maximum output of about 50 gigawatts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/germany-energy-renewables.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-91942\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/germany-energy-renewables.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"590\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/germany-energy-renewables.jpg 590w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/germany-energy-renewables-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most of Germany&#8217;s coal-fired power stations were not even operating on Sunday, April 30th,&#8221; Patrick Graichen of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.agora-energiewende.de\/en\/\" >Agora Energiewende<\/a> told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/graph-of-the-day-germanys-record-85-renewables-over-weekend-60743\/\" >RenewEconomy<\/a>. &#8220;Nuclear power sources, which are planned to be completely phased out by 2022, were also severely reduced.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Graichen added that days like Sunday would be &#8220;completely normal&#8221; by 2030 thanks to the government&#8217;s continued investment in the Energiewende initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Following the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/fukushima\" >Fukushima<\/a> disaster in Japan, Germany announced in May 2011 that it plans to phase out nuclear and shut down all its nuclear power plants by 2022.
