{"id":93892,"date":"2017-06-19T12:00:11","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T11:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=93892"},"modified":"2017-06-15T12:31:04","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T11:31:04","slug":"children-hardest-hit-as-cholera-spreads-in-war-torn-yemen-unicef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2017\/06\/children-hardest-hit-as-cholera-spreads-in-war-torn-yemen-unicef\/","title":{"rendered":"Children Hardest Hit as Cholera Spreads in War-Torn Yemen \u2013 UNICEF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/un-news-centre-logo.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-93896 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/un-news-centre-logo-e1497526224804.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"104\" \/><\/a><em>14 Jun 2017<\/em> \u2013 As the outbreak of cholera in Yemen continues to spread at an alarming rate \u2013 with terrible impact on children \u2013 the United Nations Children&#8217;s Fund (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\" >UNICEF<\/a>) has called for immediate support to enable the country&#8217;s health workers respond or risk even more deaths from the deadly disease.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement yesterday, Meritxell Rela\u00f1o, the UNICEF Representative in Yemen, said that despite massive challenges, health workers \u201chave spared no effort in responding to the emergency \u2013 even when their salaries have not been paid for nearly nine months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/media\/media_96428.html\" >urgent solution<\/a> to pay health workers, more children will die \u2013 no matter how much humanitarian aid is delivered to the country,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UN agency, more than 124,000 cholera cases have been recorded over the past month \u2013 more than half of them children, and many who were already suffering from malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p>Children, also account for nearly a quarter of the 923 deaths due to the disease, which is overwhelming what remains of a health system and sanitation system already at the verge of collapse due to the conflict, now into its third year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_93894\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/YemenCholera02-06-17.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93894\" class=\"wp-image-93894\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/YemenCholera02-06-17-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/YemenCholera02-06-17.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/YemenCholera02-06-17-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/YemenCholera02-06-17-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-93894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A child with severe diarrhoea or cholera receives treatment at the Sab&#8217;een Hospital in Sana&#8217;a, Yemen,on 12 May 2017. \u00a9 UNICEF\/UN065873\/Alzekri<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Now, this outbreak has left hospitals and treatment centres are struggling to cope with the large number of patients coming in from across the country and medical supplies, including vital medicines and intravenous fluids also running out.<\/p>\n<p>UN and humanitarian partners are trying to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unocha.org\/story\/rainy-season-deepens-fears-cholera-spreading-yemen\" >respond and have airlifted some 67 tons medicinal supplies<\/a>.
