{"id":9421,"date":"2011-01-10T00:17:23","date_gmt":"2011-01-09T23:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=9421"},"modified":"2016-02-20T12:40:08","modified_gmt":"2016-02-20T12:40:08","slug":"about-the-editorial-islam-and-the-west-some-differences-nov-29-2010-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2011\/01\/about-the-editorial-islam-and-the-west-some-differences-nov-29-2010-2\/","title":{"rendered":"About the Editorial &#8220;Islam and the West &#8211; Some Differences&#8221; &#8211; Nov. 29, 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Readers have kindly pointed out two unfortunate formulations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The statement about stoning in Deuteronomy 22:21 should not be seen as Judeo-Christian even if found in the Old Testament in the Christian Bible, given how it is negated in the New Testament, John 7:53-8:11.<\/p>\n<p>And then there is the <em>Nabi<\/em> vs. <em>Rasul<\/em> distinction; prophet vs. messenger.\u00a0 Many Muslims and scholars had been and were consulted, and here is one statement (from Abbas Aroua):<\/p>\n<p>It is normal that you get different ideas, because there are various ways of distinguishing <em>nabi<\/em> and <em>rasul<\/em> by Muslim scholars.\u00a0 The one I feel happy with is the following:<\/p>\n<p>First, in the Arabic Language: <em>Nabii<\/em> means Prophet whereas <em>Rasul<\/em> means Messenger, Envoy.<\/p>\n<p>Second, in Religion:\u00a0 <em>Nabii<\/em> is the one who comes to remind people about a message they received and, with time passing, forgot about.\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Rasul <\/em>is the one who comes to remind people about the previous versions of the message and bring an updated version of it (so a <em>Rasul<\/em> is also a <em>Nabii<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>For Muslims the books brought by Moses, Jesus, Muhammad and the many other messengers, are different versions of the same message.<\/p>\n<p>With this definition, Moses (Musa in Arabic), Jesus (Isa in Arabic) and Muhammad are all both prophets and messengers (<em>Nabii <\/em>and<em> Rasul<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>One fundamental point in the Islamic credo is not to discriminate between the messengers of God.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Readers have kindly pointed out two unfortunate formulations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[41],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9421","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-tms-peace-journalism"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9421","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9421"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9421\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9421"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9421"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9421"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
