(AP\/Muhammed Muheisen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>22 Jun 2017 &#8211; <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/globaltrends2016\/\" > A United Nations report<\/a> has shed light on the world\u2019s burgeoning crisis of displaced peoples, finding that a record 65.6 million were forced to vacate their homes in 2016 alone. More than half of them were minors.<\/p>\n<p>The<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/\" > Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees<\/a> (UNHCR), which drafted the report, put the figure into perspective, stating that increasing conflict and persecution worldwide have led to \u201cone person being displaced every three seconds \u2013 less than the time it takes to read this sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UN High Commissioner Filippo Grandi called the figure \u201cunacceptable\u201d and called for \u201csolidarity and a common purpose in preventing and resolving the crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, what the UN report failed to mention was the role of U.S. foreign intervention, indirect or direct, in fomenting the conflicts responsible for producing most of the world\u2019s refugees.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, three of the nations producing the highest number of refugees are Syria (12 million refugees created in 2016), Afghanistan (4.7 million) and Iraq (4.2 million).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Watch the\u00a0UNHCR\u2019s New Global Trends Report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hBFgI4D8eEM<\/p>\n<p>The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan are known to be<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/MyMPN\/raed-jarrar-east-lost\/5423\/\" > the direct result of U.S. military invasions<\/a> in the early 2000s, as well as the U.S.\u2019 ongoing occupation of those nations. Decades after invading both countries, the U.S.\u2019 destabilizing military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/thousands-of-additional-us-troops-head-to-syria-iraq\/225789\/\" > has continued to increase<\/a> in recent years, with the Trump administration most recently announcing<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/nationworld\/ct-us-troops-afghanistan-20170615-story.html\" > plans to send thousands<\/a> of soldiers to Afghanistan in the coming months. It is worth noting that <em>each<\/em> U.S. soldier in Afghanistan<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/it-costs--2-1-million-per-year-for-each-soldier-deployed-in-afghanistan--report-133150602.html\" > costs U.S. taxpayers $2.1 million.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. has yet to directly invade Syria, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gabbard.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/congresswoman-tulsi-gabbard-returns-syria-renewed-calls-end-regime-change-war\" >the U.S. role in the conflict is clear<\/a> and Syria\u2019s destabilization and the overthrow of its current regime <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/declassified-cia-report-exposes-25-years-u-s-plans-destabilize-syria\/225553\/\" >have long been planned<\/a> by the U.S. government. The U.S. and its allies, particularly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/new-report-confirms-israel-secretly-funding-syrian-rebels-years\/229038\/\" >Israel<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2016-10-11\/hillary-confirms-saudi-arabia-qatar-are-funding-isis-leaked-email\" >Saudi Arabia<\/a>, have consistently funded \u201crebel\u201d groups that have not only perpetuated the Syrian conflict for six long years, but have also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/whats-name-u-s-takes-syrias-al-qaeda-off-terror-watchlists\/228026\/\" >committed atrocity after atrocity<\/a> targeting civilians in Syrian cities, towns, and communities \u2013 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/israels-yinon-plan-saudi-wahhabism-us-wars-arab-christians-pushed-mass-exodus\/228409\/\" >a major factor<\/a> in convincing Syrians to leave their homes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The U.S. must stop supporting terrorists who are destroying Syria and her people.<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Gngsh01XCB\" >https:\/\/t.co\/Gngsh01XCB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tulsi Gabbard \ud83c\udf3a (@TulsiGabbard) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TulsiGabbard\/status\/824417744229654529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >January 26, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The report ranks Colombia as the world\u2019s second-largest producer of refugees, with 7.7 million Colombians displaced in 2016. Like Syria, the U.S. has not directly invaded Colombia, but is<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coha.org\/colombias-invisible-crisis-internally-displaced-persons\/#_edn5\" > known to have extensively funded paramilitary groups<\/a>, also known as \u201cdeath squads,\u201d in the country since the 1980s, when then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan declared a \u201cwar on drugs\u201d in Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. efforts <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2014\/01\/29\/the-u-s-assassination-program-in-colombia\/\" >have long helped fuel<\/a> the civil war between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and pro-government, U.S.-funded paramilitary groups. This conflict has lasted for more than half a century.<\/p>\n<p>In 2000, then-President Bill Clinton\u2019s administration funded<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/daniel-robelo\/hillary-clinton-plan-colombia_b_8557396.html\" > the disastrous \u201cPlan Colombia\u201d<\/a> with $4 billion in U.S. taxpayer funds, ostensibly to fight drug trafficking and insurgents. Almost all of this money was used to fund the Colombian military and its weapon purchases. \u201cPlan Colombia\u201d ultimately intensified armed violence, military deployments, human rights abuses by the Colombian military, and \u2013 of course \u2013 the internal displacement of Colombians. In 2011, the U.S. pushed South Sudan to secede from Sudan, as South Sudan holds the vast majority of Sudan\u2019s oil reserves \u2014 the largest oil reserves in all of Africa. The U.S.\u2019 push for the creation of an independent South Sudan<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/350623-south-sudan-us-china\/\" > dislodged Chinese claims<\/a> to Sudanese oil, as the Chinese had previously signed oil contracts with the (now Northern) Sudanese government.<\/p>\n<p>But when nation-building efforts went awry and civil war broke out just two years later,<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/us-china-power-struggle-fuels-violence-death-south-sudan\/221425\/\" > some analysts suggested<\/a> that the conflict only started when South Sudan\u2019s president began to cozy up to China. According to the UN report, approximately 3.3 million people in South Sudan have fled their homes since the war began.<\/p>\n<p>Grandi has called on the world\u2019s nations to help prevent and resolve the global refugee crisis.
