{"id":95053,"date":"2017-07-10T12:01:37","date_gmt":"2017-07-10T11:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=95053"},"modified":"2017-07-06T11:05:43","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T10:05:43","slug":"universiti-malaya-chandra-muzaffar-to-host-tribunal-on-atrocities-against-rohingya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2017\/07\/universiti-malaya-chandra-muzaffar-to-host-tribunal-on-atrocities-against-rohingya\/","title":{"rendered":"Universiti Malaya, Chandra Muzaffar to Host Tribunal on Atrocities against Rohingya"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Dr Chandra Muzaffar who is organising committee chairman for Tribunal on the Rohingyas says witnesses will be called to testify in court-like setting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>4 Jul 2017 &#8211;<\/em> A tribunal that hopes to expose claims of crimes against the Rohingya and other ethnic groups by the Myanmar government will hold a hearing at the Universiti Malaya in September.<\/p>\n<p>Social activist Dr Chandra Muzaffar, who is the organising committee chairman for the Tribunal on the Rohingyas, Kachins and other ethnic minorities, said that the tribunal wants to expose the alleged inhuman treatment and push to stop the crimes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_95054\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/chandra-muzaffar2.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95054\" class=\"wp-image-95054\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/chandra-muzaffar2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-95054\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Chandra Muzaffar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe process will be similar to a hearing, with the Myanmar ethnic groups testifying before a jury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom there, the tribunal will make a conclusion based on oral testimonies on the atrocities and present our findings to the United Nation\u2019s Fact Finding Mission that was tasked to send its\u2019 official to Yangon,\u201d he said in a press conference today.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the Myanmar government, led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, had publicly rejected the UN\u2019s team into the country.<\/p>\n<p>Also present at the press conference was Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (Centhra) chief executive Azril Mohd Amin and International Forum on Buddhist-Muslim Relations\u2019 (BMF) secretary KV Soon.<\/p>\n<p>Chandra said previously a similar tribunal was held in London, on March 6 and 7, which concluded that the UN and Asean had to take swift actions against Myanmar to stop the crimes against the minorities groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Kuala Lumpur tribunal is a continuation of the London tribunal, with more witnesses coming this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to make findings and present it to the public and push the Asean governments, including Myanmar, to stop the genocide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/chandra-muzaffar.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95055\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/chandra-muzaffar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/chandra-muzaffar.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/chandra-muzaffar-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The activist however, lamented the findings are not legally binding and cannot be enforced by law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not legally binding but I believe that like other tribunals, such as the 2005 Citizens\u2019 Tribunal on Iraq, it has persuasive powers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to use it to persuade the people to stand up and speak out against the military government,\u201d Chandra said.<\/p>\n<p>Azril, who is also a lawyer added that it would be difficult for the tribunal\u2019s findings to be pushed to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to be tried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, Malaysia and Myanmar are not signatories of the Rome Statute.
