Dogs live in a world of smells\u2014
\nsucculent, sensual: a melange
\nof sexuality–known and unknown,
\nfriendly and prohibitive.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re color-blind,
\nlove blindly, lead the blind (when so inclined).<\/p>\n

Dogs live in the world of Now\u2014leaping
\ncatching frisbees, canines gripping,
\ntail-wagging; or\u2014snarling, menacing,
\nloyal to a fault\u2014and faultlessly alert
\nto guard their master\u2019s home;<\/p>\n

their master\u2019s
\nspies, their master\u2019s other eyes, judging
\nfriend or foe by scent, barking
\napproval, disdain, warnings; judging
\nother realms\u2014domains beyond our senses;
\nteaching, if we have the will,
\nother sensibilities, trotting
\ndown corridors, barking down corridors.
