To be a Portugal seagull
\nwhere the river meets the sea!
\nRed roofs ascend
\ntree-coated hills;
\na white bridge soars
\nabove
\nimagination\u2019s wings.<\/p>\n

Where the Douro drains
\nwine-laden vines, and spills
\n\u201cNow\u201d into Eternal Now–
\ntimeless mariners embark
\nfor worlds of spices, worlds of gold
\nover Atlantic crests
\nand where the Indus swells:
\nHenry the Navigator sees
\nVasco da Gama and doomed Magellan
\nride the dome of waves, answering
\ncalls within to venture out.<\/p>\n

A kind of love, and a kind of frenzy:
\nthe need to assert and exert.
\nPassion and dispassion, geared and paired.
\nWhere does the river end, the sea begin?
\nThe place beguiles the explorer.
\nThe unknown bewitches;
\nthe unknown betrothes.<\/p>\n

Past, present and future whir
\nin lunar calculations, in a dance,
\nand the human tide and tirade comes
\nand goes, comes and caws
\nunder the gulls\u2019 wings,
\nin the gulls\u2019 small eyes.<\/p>\n
