{"id":9701,"date":"2011-01-31T00:00:15","date_gmt":"2011-01-30T23:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=9701"},"modified":"2011-01-26T12:33:31","modified_gmt":"2011-01-26T11:33:31","slug":"palestine-papers-stir-global-reaction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2011\/01\/palestine-papers-stir-global-reaction\/","title":{"rendered":"Palestine Papers Stir Global Reaction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s release on Sunday [23 Jan 2011] of the <a href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/palestinepapers\/\"  target=\"_blank\">Palestine Papers<\/a>, a trove of documents related to Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, has led to reaction throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinian Authority (PA)\u00a0has gone on the offensive, with President Mahmoud Abbas calling the release \u201cshameful,\u201d and his adviser Yasser Abed Rabbo accusing Al Jazeera of launching a &#8220;smear campaign&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Former Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qurei said &#8220;many parts of the documents were fabricated, as part of the incitement against the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian leadership&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, said the documents reveal the PA&#8217;s &#8220;close collaboration with [Israel], and reflects its role in trying to kill off the Palestinian cause&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On the Israeli side, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/news\/diplomacy-defense\/lieberman-leaked-palestinian-papers-prove-interim-deal-is-only-option-1.338872\"  target=\"_blank\">Haaretz<\/a> reports that foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman said the papers &#8220;prove that the only solution to the conflict between the two sides is a long-term interim agreement, such as his own proposal for a Palestinian state&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The documents prove that if even Olmert and Livni couldn&#8217;t reach a compromise with the Palestinians, everyone will eventually see that the only solution is a long-term interim agreement,&#8221; Lieberman said in an interview with Israel Radio on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any rational person would reach the same conclusion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, former Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni, who is prominently featured in the Palestine Papers, initially released a statement through her office <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/articles\/0,7340,L-4017935,00.html\"  target=\"_blank\">saying<\/a> she would &#8220;continue to maintain the discreteness of the talks, in order to protect Israeli interests&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But in a speech on Monday, Livni <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/DiplomacyAndPolitics\/Article.aspx?id=205042\"  target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> it is &#8220;clear that the process did not fail and was not exhausted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She added: &#8220;It did not end, but was not allowed to ripen until an agreement was reached because of elections in Israel and this government&#8217;s choice not to continue the negotiations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>United Nations envoy Robert Serry added his voice to the debate in a <a href=\"http:\/\/unispal.un.org\/UNISPAL.nsf\/47D4E277B48D9D3685256DDC00612265\/4D4A34C800659D1985257822005AFC90\"  target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> released to the press: \u201cI welcome robust political debate, but some of the commentary I have seen conveys an inaccurate impression.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can personally attest to the commitment of the Palestinian leadership to secure the legitimate rights and interests of the Palestinian people, based on international law and UN resolutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Writing on Twitter, US state department spokesman PJ Crowley, said: &#8220;The US government is reviewing the alleged Palestinian documents released by Al-Jazeera. We cannot vouch for their veracity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He later added that the US &#8220;remains focused on a two-state solution and will continue to work with the parties to narrow existing differences on core issues&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Former US negotiators have also weighed in, with Aaron David Miller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2011\/jan\/24\/reaction-leaked-palestine-papers\"  target=\"_blank\">saying<\/a> the documents show that the Israeli government could not sign a deal because it did not have the political standing to do so<\/p>\n<p>Reaction was swift on social media sites like Twitter.
