Getty Images<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>24 Aug 2017 &#8211; <\/em>Brazil&#8217;s government has abolished a vast national reserve in the Amazon to open up the area to mining.<\/p>\n<p>The area, covering 46,000 sq km (17,800 sq miles), straddles the northern states of Amap\u00e1 and Par\u00e1, and is thought to be rich in gold, and other minerals.<\/p>\n<p>The government said nine conservation and indigenous land areas within it would continue to be legally protected.<\/p>\n<p>But activists have voiced concern that these areas could be badly compromised.<\/p>\n<p>A decree from President Michel Temer abolished a protected area known as the National Reserve of Copper and Associates (Renca).<\/p>\n<p>Its size is larger than Denmark and about 30% of it will be open to mining.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_97527\" style=\"width: 634px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/brazil-brasil-minas-mines-renca-reserve3.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97527\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97527\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/brazil-brasil-minas-mines-renca-reserve3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/brazil-brasil-minas-mines-renca-reserve3.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/brazil-brasil-minas-mines-renca-reserve3-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-97527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The mining and energy ministry says protected forest areas and indigenous reserves will not be affected.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The objective of the measure is to attract new investments, generating wealth for the country and employment and income for society, always based on the precepts of sustainability,&#8221; the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>But opposition Senator Randolfe Rodrigues denounced the move as &#8220;the biggest attack on the Amazon of the last 50 years&#8221;, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oglobo.globo.com\/economia\/exploracao-mineral-na-amazonia-pode-levar-disputas-judiciais-21737004\" >O Globo newspaper reported<\/a> (in Portuguese).<\/p>\n<p>Maur\u00edcio Voivodic, head of the conservation body WWF in Brazil, warned last month that mining in the area would lead to &#8220;demographic explosion, deforestation, the destruction of water resources, the loss of biodiversity and the creation of land conflict&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>According to the WWF report, the main area of interest for copper and gold exploration is in one of the protected areas, the Biological Reserve of Maicuru.<\/p>\n<p>There is also said to be gold in the Par\u00e1 State forest, which lies within the area.<\/p>\n<p>The WWF says there is potential for conflict too in two indigenous reserves that are home to various ethnic communities living in relative isolation.<\/p>\n<p>WWF&#8217;s report said that a &#8220;gold rush in the region could create irreversible damage to these cultures&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the government insisted on opening up these areas for mining without discussing environmental safeguards it will have to deal with an international outcry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>_________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>More:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-38391377\" >Amazon culture clash<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-30304658\" >Loss of Indigenous lands threatens climate <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-36573075\" >Indigenous leaders fight for survival <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-41033228\" >Go to Original \u2013 bbc.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>24 Aug 2017 &#8211; Brazil&#8217;s government has abolished a vast national reserve in the Amazon to open up the area to mining.
