You can <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/en\/take-action\/\" >take action on these issues here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new solar farm generates 40 megawatts, which can power 15,000 homes for a year. That\u2019s more than six times the second biggest active floating farm, which has a capacity of 6.3MW.<\/p>\n<p>The project is part of China\u2019s much broader strategy of investing in renewable energy. China has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_power_by_country\" >more solar capacity<\/a> than any other country in the world and it intends to invest at least <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/en\/content\/china-unveils-blockbuster-361-billion-plan-for-cle\/\" >$361 billion in renewables by 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After the US pulled out of the Paris climate agreement earlier in the year, China <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/en\/content\/eu-paris-climate-agreement-trump-withdrawal\/\" >doubled down on its commitments<\/a> and made joint statements with other countries to encourage stronger climate action.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Read More: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/en\/content\/india-turns-on-worlds-largest-solar-farm\/\" >India Turns On World&#8217;s Largest Solar Power Plant<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Floating solar farms are not as common as other forms of solar energy, but they have numerous advantages, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2017\/06\/china-worlds-largest-floating-solar-power\/\" >according to the World Economic Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t take up space on land, their solar panels are more effective because water cools them down, and they can increase the amount of available drinking or irrigation water by limiting evaporation.<\/p>\n<p>China still has a long way to go before it can be considered to have a sustainable economy.<\/p>\n<p>China consumes nearly as much coal as the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=16271\" >rest of the world combined<\/a>.
