{"id":98815,"date":"2017-09-25T12:00:43","date_gmt":"2017-09-25T11:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=98815"},"modified":"2017-09-24T12:30:54","modified_gmt":"2017-09-24T11:30:54","slug":"pogrom-of-minority-rohingya-in-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2017\/09\/pogrom-of-minority-rohingya-in-myanmar\/","title":{"rendered":"Pogrom of Minority Rohingya in Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is high time that world body should make an all-out effort to stop present pogrom of minority Rohingya in\u00a0Rakhine\u00a0state\u00a0by\u00a0armed forces of Myanmar known as\u00a0Tatmadaw. Pogrom\u00a0resemblance of\u00a0tactic\u00a0adopted by Nazi Germany against Jewish\u00a0minority.\u00a0Only difference is that Nazi Germany\u00a0used gas\u00a0chamber to kill\u00a0Jewish in concentration camps\u00a0whereas military junta of\u00a0Myanmar torching\u00a0villages of\u00a0Rohingya, burnt\u00a0houses\u00a0and stop aid to Rohingya\u00a0who\u00a0are in the camps\u00a0and restriction imposed on movement.\u00a0Attack\u00a0which has begun on 25\u00a0August is the latest incursion of Myanmar armed forces on the pretext of\u00a0killing\u00a0of one soldier and six police personnel and civilian including Rohingya by\u00a0Rohingya\u00a0militants as reported by office of State\u00a0Counselor.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0is the first time that Rohingya militants took arms after having lost of several hundred\u00a0lives, homes\u00a0and properties by border security forces of Myanmar since 2012.\u00a0According to BBC, more than 100.00 Rohingya \u00a0refugees \u00a0have\u00a0 entered Bangladesh since army\u00a0operation\u00a0has begun in Rakhine\u00a0state\u00a0on 25 August accusing\u00a0 Myanmar authorities\u00a0of ethnic cleansing while International Organization for migrant reported about 18,500\u00a0Rohingya\u00a0crossed into\u00a0 Bangladesh. New\u00a0York based Human Rights watch said\u00a0satellite\u00a0photos appear to show \u00a0widespread\u00a0 burning in ten areas of North Rakhine state. The\u00a0World\u00a0Food Program of United\u00a0Nations\u00a0reported 80,000 Muslim Rohingya children are starving in Rakhine State.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Rohingya was expelled by the military junta under General Ne Win of\u00a0Burma\u00a0in 1979\u00a0now\u00a0 known as\u00a0Myanmar.\u00a0As\u00a0many as 200,000 were given shelter by government of Bangladesh on humanitarian grounds. A diplomatic \u00a0maneuver\u00a0was exercised by Bangladesh\u00a0 government\u00a0to convince friendly\u00a0 countries, including\u00a0Malaysia&#8217;s government of\u00a0Datuk Hussein\u00a0 Onn\u00a0to\u00a0put pressure on the Burmese government to take back Rohingya minority community to Burma. A bilateral agreement was signed between the Bangladesh\u00a0government\u00a0and Burmese government of\u00a0Gen. Ne\u00a0Win for repatriation. Within a span of sixteen months they were repatriated back to Burma. In 1982, the Burmese\u00a0 government\u00a0 had made an\u00a0amendment\u00a0to the\u00a0citizenship\u00a0law which\u00a0 took away citizenship of\u00a0 Rohingyas\u00a0in Burma.\u00a0The ruling army junta changed its name from Union of Burma to Union of Myanmar in 1989, a year after thousands were killed in the suppression of a popular uprising\u00a0against\u00a0army junta when denied handing over power to winner of National League for\u00a0Democracy(NLD) of\u00a0Aung San Suu Kyi in November of 1988. That law barred President of NLD to become President of Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>Rohingya people again became victim of Myanmar military junta in 1990 when they conducted an operation under\u00a0Nagamin\u00a0(Dragon\u00a0King) in an effort to eliminate illegal immigrants from the\u00a0 country. Military\u00a0Junta concentrated on the Rakhine state to drive out\u00a0Rohingya. Local\u00a0Buddhists along with the military attacked Rohingya which caused 270,000 of them flee by March of 1990 from Myanmar to Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>This writer recalled that\u00a0present\u00a0Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio\u00a0Guterres\u00a0has had discussion on 12 July of 2012\u00a0as\u00a0 UN\u00a0High\u00a0 Commissioner for Refugees\u00a0with\u00a0Myanmar&#8217;s\u00a0 immediate\u00a0 past President General Thein Sein\u00a0to find solution of ethnic\u00a0enmity. Myanmar\u00a0former President told UN High\u00a0commissioner\u00a0for Refugees that solution to the ethnic enmity would be solved if they are either send to a third country or\u00a0have the\u00a0UNHCR look after them. That\u00a0means\u00a0Myanmar President walked away from his commitment to take back\u00a0Rohingyas from\u00a0Bangladesh. This\u00a0commitment\u00a0was made to\u00a0the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh\u00a0Hasina\u00a0when she paid a visit to\u00a0Myanmar\u00a0in\u00a0 December of 2011.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0is\u00a0doubtful\u00a0that\u00a0recommendation of Independent\u00a0commission led by former Secretary-General of\u00a0UN Kofi\u00a0Annan\u00a0to\u00a0resolve\u00a0chronic\u00a0crisis in Rakhine state\u00a0would\u00a0be carried out by the office of State\u00a0Counselor\u00a0successfully because when the\u00a0commission\u00a0was set up last year Tatmadaw backed Union\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0and development Party (USDP), now\u00a0branded as MA BA\u00a0Tha\u00a0Islamophobic\u00a0monk organization, and\u00a0Rakhine nationalists jointly\u00a0rejected\u00a0formation of commission which was\u00a0seen\u00a0as\u00a0 intervention\u00a0by foreigners in internal affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Having seen denial of basic Human\u00a0rights, lack\u00a0of rule of\u00a0law, lack\u00a0of\u00a0democratic system and denial of basic rights of all minority\u00a0groups, redrawing\u00a0borders of minority states Myanmar ultra-nationalist policies adopted by all successive military\u00a0regimes will not surrender power as indicated in 1982 controversial law. I recalled Union of Burma signed Pan Long\u00a0Treaty on 12\u00a0February of 1947 ensuring\u00a0rights of minority groups they\u00a0deserve\u00a0by\u00a0most of the representatives of minority communities and father of modern Burma\u00a0Gen. Aung\u00a0San, father\u00a0of present State\u00a0Counselor\u00a0 Suu\u00a0 Kyi, and\u00a0others. Military\u00a0regime following killing of\u00a0Gen. Aung\u00a0San has continued ignoring fundamental rights of minorities.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, US\u00a0Ambassador\u00a0to UN Nicky\u00a0Haley\u00a0has\u00a0spoken to\u00a0international community to stand together and called on Burma&#8217;s government to cooperate with a UN mission charged with probing alleged abuses by military and security\u00a0forces.\u00a0 Ambassador\u00a0of the United Kingdom Matthew\u00a0 Rycroft\u00a0urged on the Security Council to discuss\u00a0reports\u00a0of mass civilian\u00a0casualties\u00a0after\u00a0raiding\u00a0by Myanmar security\u00a0forces\u00a0against Rohingya militants.\u00a0Security Council condemned killings on both sides but did not make any strong statement because of insistence by Chinese Ambassador to\u00a0UN. It\u00a0is high time that China should realize predicament in Myanmar because China is facing brunt around\u00a0its\u00a0own\u00a0border\u00a0as a result of Chinese\u00a0origin\u00a0Kachin ethnic minority in Kachin state in Northern Myanmar are fighting against\u00a0military\u00a0Junta of\u00a0Myanmar. Conflict\u00a0in Kachin state\u00a0 occasionally\u00a0spills over to Chinese border.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from Foreign Minister of United\u00a0Kingdom, Turkish\u00a0President, Iranian\u00a0 President, Indonesian\u00a0President\u00a0criticized\u00a0world leaders to show\u00a0lukewarm\u00a0 criticism\u00a0against Myanmar\u00a0 government. Turkish\u00a0President praised Bangladesh government for providing\u00a0sanctuaries\u00a0to Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar.\u00a0Foreign Minister of Indonesia is now visiting Bangladesh to discuss about plight of Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar who took shelter in\u00a0Bangladesh, Malaysia\u00a0 and Indonesia, largest\u00a0Muslim country in the\u00a0World.\u00a0It\u00a0is understood Malaysia &#8216;s foreign ministry summoned Myanmar&#8217;s envoy to lodge strong protest against inhuman\u00a0treatment\u00a0meted out to Rohingya minority Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0being the situation on the ground this writer suggests to the Secretary-general of the United Nations, who is fully aware of the fate of\u00a0Rohingya\u00a0minority in\u00a0 Myanmar,\u00a0to\u00a0send peace-keeping forces of the UN to Rakhine State to protect security of minority community of Rakhine\u00a0state, apart\u00a0from bring back Rohingya from around neighboring countries to their\u00a0homeland.\u00a0 Security\u00a0 Council\u00a0should consider imposing economic sanctions against Myanmar\u00a0government\u00a0as well.\u00a0 Enough\u00a0bloods have\u00a0flown\u00a0in the\u00a0Naf\u00a0river.\u00a0Stop\u00a0bloodshed further\u00a0and resolve man-made\u00a0crisis.
