21 Sep 2017<\/em> \u2013 French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday [20 Sep] said attacks on Myanmar\u2019s Rohingya minority amounted to \u201cgenocide.<\/p>\n

France will work with other members of the U.N. Security Council for a condemnation of \u201cthis genocide which is unfolding, this ethnic cleansing,\u201d Macron said in an interview with the French TV channel TMC.<\/p>\n

Macron\u2019s use of the word \u201cgenocide\u201d marks his strongest verbal attack yet on the military drive against the Rohingya.<\/p>\n

More than 420,000 members of the Muslim minority have fled Myanmar for the safety of neighboring Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

French President Emmanuel Macron<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cWe must condemn the ethnic purification which is underway and act,\u201d Macron said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAsking for the violence to end, asking for humanitarian access \u2026 progressively enables an escalation\u201d under U.N. auspices, Macron said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the U.N. issues a condemnation, there are consequences which can provide a framework for intervention under the U.N.,\u201d Macron said.<\/p>\n

Rohingya, who are predominantly Muslim, are reviled by many in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.<\/p>\n

The U.N. human rights chief has described the systematic attacks against the Rohingya minority by the security forces as a \u201ctextbook example of ethnic cleansing.\u201d<\/p>\n
