25 Sep 2017 – <\/em>Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno said that the South American country would continue to provide asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.<\/p>\n

Moreno, who spoke to RT on Saturday, implied that there are looming threats to Assange’s life and as such will allow the whistleblower to continue to stay at Ecuador’s London embassy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no death penalty in\u00a0Ecuador, so our country has the right to\u00a0grant asylum to\u00a0Assange. We will continue to\u00a0give him patronage for\u00a0as long as\u00a0we assume that his life may be in\u00a0danger,\u201d Moreno said in an interview with RT.<\/p>\n

The president said that Quito has asked Assange to not issue any further comments on Ecuador\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe continued to\u00a0express his opinion on\u00a0this issue and we let him to\u00a0do that in\u00a0order to\u00a0avoid restriction of\u00a0freedom of\u00a0speech, but\u00a0we earnestly urge him to\u00a0abstain from\u00a0that,\u201d Moreno added.<\/p>\n

Assange has been living at the embassy for the past five years, after being granted political asylum in 2012.<\/p>\n

In 2010, two women accused the Australian of\u00a0rape, which he denied.<\/p>\n

Eventually, the charges were dropped following\u00a0a seven-year investigation, but the UK police said Assange would still be arrested, for violating bail term, if he exits the embassy.<\/p>\n
