Now imagine advertisers using billboards to send messages to your smartphone.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s the future of&#8217; &#8216;advertised spying&#8217; in America. (Yes, I made that term up.)<\/p>\n<p>An <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/economy\/article174196456.html\" >article<\/a> in McClatchy, warns that a new generation of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/economy\/article174196456.html\" >&#8220;smart digital billboards will detect the make, model and year of oncoming vehicles and project ads tailored to the motorist.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The article ominously warns, that smart billboards can guess a motorist&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/603779\/how-google-street-view-images-reveal-the-demographic-makeup-of-the-us\/\" >home address,<\/a> age, race and income level based on the vehicle they are driving. And also claims, advertisers will be able to send messages to a person&#8217;s smartphone as they pass by a smart billboard.<\/p>\n<p>Companies like <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.synapslabs.com\/\" >SYNAPS<\/a>\u00a0want to create a network of spying billboards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Synaps-logo.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-99495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Synaps-logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"71\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>SYNAPS, boasts about <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.synapslabs.com\/\" >&#8216;designing\u00a0intelligent sensors that recognize car models and help a billboard choose the best message for their drivers&#8217;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>SYNAPS, describes how advertisers can personalize their advertising&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;It really is up to you to choose who will see your advertising \u2013 and it does not matter, where the billboard is. Pick your segment based on a specific car model and age, car price or size or even how conservative or modern it is.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>(<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.synapslabs.com\/for-advertisers\" >Source<\/a>)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u00a0MIT&#8217;s connection to spying billboards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SYNAPS, appears to have gotten it&#8217;s start in Russia, as a recent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/603743\/moscow-billboard-targets-ads-based-on-the-car-youre-driving\/\" >article<\/a> in MIT Technology\u00a0Review points out.<\/p>\n<p>Co-founders Alex Pustov and Alesky Utkin expect to be operating 20-50 smart billboards in Russia this year. They also claim, to encrypt all the license plate data they collect.<\/p>\n<p>Would you trust a foreign company with your license plate data?<\/p>\n<p>What is MIT&#8217;s connection to SYNAPS?<\/p>\n<p>According to SYNAPS, their American business is located at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/\" >MIT&#8217;s Martin Trust <\/a>in Cambridge, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>What does Martin Trust do?<\/p>\n<p>They <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/mission\/\" >claim<\/a> to supply students with &#8216;support and connections to become effective entrepreneurs&#8217;.<br \/>\nMartin Trust also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/mission\/\" >claims<\/a>,\u00a0they\u00a0nurture and assist new companies and make sure they have long-term success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can smart billboards spy on cellphones?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The McClatchy article warned, that smart billboards can spy on cellphones.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Smart billboards can also target motorists on the highway or pedestrians passing bus shelters by picking up cellular or mobile signatures, WiFi signals or even beaconing given off by certain apps.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/economy\/article174196456.html\" >Source<\/a>)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately, universities helping companies or government agencies to spy on the public has become the norm. How long does SYNAPS store the data for?<\/p>\n<p>SYNAPS is not the only company using smart billboards to target and track our travel patterns. Since 2015, automakers\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5eXd81u873A\" >Lexus<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/news.milestonesys.com\/lamargm-use-worknet-analytics-for-milestone-digital-billboard-marketing\/\" >GM <\/a>and Chevrolet (seen below) have been using smart billboards to spy on motorists.<\/p>\n<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RCXl1M-KuQs<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, General Motors received requests from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/download.milestonesys.com\/PR\/Customer-Story\/GMBillboards-Lamar-Posterscope-CS.pdf\" >numerous automotive companies and car dealerships<\/a> to purchase their smart billboards. Fyi, GM has also been using\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Kj7Dm_i-OoM\" >facial recognition billboards<\/a>\u00a0to spy on people.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Yahoo patented a smart billboard that uses cameras and microphones to spy on everyone.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The search giant has received a patent for a \u2018smart billboard\u2019 that uses cameras, microphones and a range of sensors to capture information of passers-by for ad targeting purposes. But as I have stated numerous times, that&#8217;s not the case.
