Human Rights Council approved the measure on Friday with a 27-13 vote, with seven countries abstaining.\u00a0The United States, led by Amb. Nikki Haley, voted for an amendment to the resolution that\u00a0said the death penalty was not necessarily a human rights violation, and voted against <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ilga.org\/downloads\/HRC36_death_penalty_voting_resolution.pdf\" >amendments<\/a>\u00a0urging countries to stop\u00a0using experimental drugs in executions.<\/p>\n<p>The Human Rights Campaign <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/trump-admin-votes-against-resolution-condemning-death-penalty-for-same-sex\" >called<\/a> the vote \u201cbeyond disgraceful,\u201d and former Obama national security advisor Susan Rice took aim at Trump:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Shame on US!  I was proud to lead U.S. efforts at UN to protect LGBTQ people, back in the day when America stood for human rights for all \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3Y403bP7Wh\" >https:\/\/t.co\/3Y403bP7Wh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Susan Rice (@AmbassadorRice) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmbassadorRice\/status\/915265109768982528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >October 3, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration\u2019s vote is nothing new \u2014 presidents from both parties have long objected to U.N. resolutions critical of capital punishment. In December 2016, for example \u2014 in the final\u00a0weeks of Obama\u2019s\u00a0presidency \u2014 the U.S. voted against a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/ga\/search\/view_doc.asp?symbol=A\/RES\/71\/187\" >resolution<\/a>\u00a0urging states not to execute minors,\u00a0pregnant women, and the\u00a0intellectually disabled.<\/p>\n<p>While last week\u2019s\u00a0vote\u00a0is not evidence of any significant policy change, it does show what\u00a0kind of company the U.S. keeps\u00a0among\u00a0nations\u00a0that support the death penalty. Twelve\u00a0other countries joined the United States in voting against the resolution, including\u00a0Egypt, which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deathpenaltyworldwide.org\/country-search-post.cfm?country=Egypt\" >executes political dissidents<\/a>, Ethiopia, which\u00a0is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/ethiopias-war-homosexuals-224457\" >considering the death penalty<\/a> for same-sex activity, and Saudi Arabia, which, in 2015, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2014\/10\/24\/when-it-comes-beheadings-isis-has-nothing-over-saudi-arabia-277385.html\" >beheaded more people than ISIS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A 2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/files\/act500012014en.pdf\" >report<\/a> by Amnesty International found that even though the death penalty in on the books in one-third of the world\u2019s countries, only nine countries have regularly\u00a0used it in past years \u2013\u00a0including Iran,\u00a0Sudan, China and\u00a0North Korea.\u00a0In other words, when the United States defends the death penalty, it defends the practice of some of the world\u2019s worst human rights violators.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0U.S. Mission to the U.N.\u00a0did not return a\u00a0request for comment from The Intercept.<\/p>\n<p>______________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/alex-emmons-v3.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-82549 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/alex-emmons-v3-e1507214345442.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/staff\/alex-emmons\/\" >Alex Emmons<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"mailto:alex.emmons@theintercept.com\">alex.emmons@\u200btheintercept.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/10\/03\/the-u-s-voted-against-a-u-n-resolution-condemning-death-penalty-for-lgbtq-people\/\" >Go to Original \u2013 theintercept.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>3 Oct 2017 &#8211; The U.N. floated a resolution banning the use of the death penalty to punish homosexuality.
