Anatole France, full name François-Anatole Thibault (16 Apr 1844 – 12 Oct 1924), was a French poet, journalist and novelist with several best-sellers. Ironic and skeptical, he was considered in his day the ideal French man of letters. He wrote the quoted phrase in his 1894 novel, The Red Lily.
