Yesterday, DiEM25 co-founder Yanis Varoufakis delivered a powerful, unflinching speech at the European Parliament — a direct challenge to the EU’s transformation from a peace project into what he now calls a fully-fledged war machine.

At an event hosted by The Left in the European Parliament and M5S Europa, and joined by Jeffrey Sachs and Giuseppe Conte, Varoufakis made the case that Europe’s military Keynesianism is not only deepening inequality and debt but also locking the continent into permanent conflict. He lays bare the EU’s structural dependence on the United States, its complicity in the war in Gaza, and the growing alliance between liberal authoritarianism and the xenophobic far-right, and argues that the economic foundation for peace begins with ending Europe’s submission to U.S. deficits and reimagining a sovereign, democratic, green Europe.

“The EU is now a War Project – a project that will either land us in permanent war, or bankrupt us further. Or both.”

Yanis Varoufakis, a member of the Greek Parliament and a former finance minister of Greece, is leader of the MeRA25 Party, professor of economics at the University of Athens, and co-founder of DiEM25 (Democracy in Europe Movement). He is the author of ‘And the Weak Suffer What They Must? Europe’s Crisis and America’s Economic Future’; ‘Adults in the Room: My Battle with the European and American Deep Establishment’; and, most recently, the novelAnother Now’.
