U.S. military contamination in Hawai’i comes from the military bases on four of the islands. The island of Kauai has the large Pacific Missile Test Facility. The Big Island of Hawai’i has the massive 130,000 acre firing range. The island of Kahoʻolawe is still contaminated from being bombed for decades. 43,000 active duty military personel, 9,600 Guard and Reserve, 60,000 dependents and 20,000 military employees live in Hawai’i. The military complex population of 132,600 comprises 10% of the 1.4 million population of the state.

3 Sep 2020 – It is hard to argue that war is for the defense of people when modern warfare is notable for indiscriminate killing, albeit often filtered through commercial media and mislabeled by government and military officials as “collateral damage.” Defund militarism and invest in peacemakers if conflict resolution is truly the objective.

19 May 2020 – During the COVID-19 pandemic, not only will the U.S. military have the largest maritime military maneuvers in the world, with Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) coming to the waters off Hawaii August 17-31, 2020 bringing 26 nations, 25,000 military personnel, up to 50 ships and submarines and hundreds of aircraft in midst of a worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, but the U.S. Army is having a 6,000-person war game in June 2020 in Poland.

Yesterday, December 16, 2011, 40 supporters of Bradley Manning saw him in person in the military courtroom at Fort Meade, Maryland and another 60 saw him on a video feed from the court, the first time Manning has been seen by the public in 19 months. Over 100 other supporters, including 50 from Occupy Wall Street who had bused down from New York City, were at the front gates of Fort Meade in solidarity with Manning.

Manning also is being investigated in the leaks of the “Afghan War Diary” documents that were also released by WikiLeaks — in conjunction with the New York Times, The UK Guardian and the German magazine Der Spiege l– exposing the war in Afghanistan as a costly quagmire that has cost countless civilian Afghan lives, as well as the lives of over 1,000 U.S. soldiers.
