Let the Himalaya’s Chamoli Disaster Be the Final Wake up Call for India

On the morning of 7 Feb 2021, a massive flood crashed down a major tributary of the Ganga. The catastrophic event washed away the Rishiganga Hydroelectric Project. As boulders, ice, water and muck surged downstream, it substantially damaged the National Thermal Power Corporation’s Hydropower Project as well. Expedient politics disregards the fact that this is among the most earthquake-prone and ecologically sensitive regions of the world. Up until now, at least 32 people have been confirmed dead and over 170 are missing.
