Impeachment proceedings against Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff launched by speaker of the lower house Eduardo Cunha is a matter of his personal vengeance, Deputy Leader of the Workers Party in the Brazilian parliament Margarida Salomao told Sputnik Thursday.

According to Salomao, the impeachment, accusing the current Brazilian president of fiscal law violations, is a clear case of political retaliation for Rousseff’s Workers Party’s vote in the parliamentary Ethics Council to continue the process against Cunha charged in August with bribery and money laundering.

“This is not only a crude revenge, but also a clear abuse of power,” Salomao said adding that Cunha is using his position to protect himself from investigation.

According to Salomao, she believes that “a large part” of Cunha’s Brazilian Democratic Movement Party will not support their fellow party member in this process “devoid of any credibility.”

Rousseff has been facing rising discontent over the country’s struggling economy and a major corruption scandal in the state-owned energy corporation Petrobras. Rousseff headed the company for seven years, between 2003 and 2010, the period during which most of the corruption reportedly took place.
