Integrated Science and Religion for Peace

SCIENCE - SPIRITUALITY, 1 Aug 2016

Surya Nath Prasad, Ph. D. – TRANSCEND Media Service

Science has facilitated many things for human prosperity, but it has also helped to lose humanity’s peace of mind. Science alone cannot bring peace within the individual and in the world as a whole. It has led to unrest and war simultaneously with progress. Mere science creates doubts, fear and terror in man, which disturb peace. Science enables man to be free from the tyranny of the environment, but it fails to free him from the tyranny of his own nature.

Religion has led man to transcend the self or to the level of God, or utmost peace, but in the long run it makes man bankrupt with prosperity. Hence mere religion leads man to regress even to acquire lower level of prosperity

This book tells about the demerits and misuse of science and religion if they work separately. Science in absence of religion makes man (human being) slave of his own passions, desires, and animal nature. And religion in absence of science makes man (human being) vulgar, mythical, dogmatic, orthodox and superstitious. The author of these lines quoted the ideas of the great scientist Albert Einstein in their Editorial of this book, who observed, “Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind”.

This book deals also with the importance of science and religion integrally in building and sustaining peace in individuals, nations and the world.  Science trains man to deal with the physical life successfully. And religion enables man to realize his spiritual self. Science and religion both are c complementary to each other. Hence science and religion both are essential for the development of integral or global men and women everywhere to attain prosperity and peace.

The present book includes the ideas of great authors of the world including the appeals of scientists and religious workers about the necessity of integrated science and religion for creating and promoting peace on the planet earth.

Prof. Johan Galtung, a pioneer of peace studies has written Foreword for this book. He writes in his Foreword, inter alia, “Not by chance was it compiled by the indefatigable Dr. Surya Nath Prasad, himself a testimony to the Indian tradition of vasudhaiva kutumbakam (the world is my family).” And he concluded his Foreword for this book with his advices as, “Personally I would stress all of the factors mentioned. Peace is so multi-faceted. We need all the insights we can get. And we need the creativity to combine the incompatible!”

The book: Science, Religion and Peace, has been published by Dr. Surya Nath Prasad for International Association of Educators for World Peace (IAEWP – A UN Peace Messenger) in 2002.

The book is useful for scholars, researchers and teachers of peace studies and peace education, peace activists, scientists, religious workers and political leaders, and the knowledge seekers among the common people. It will suit to all libraries personal as well as institutional.
