Deep State

Deep State stretched its paws over the world’s heart;
Purred…. Deep State purred in the mind’s mazes, curled
In hidden corners; softened; retracted
Its claws…. In the citadels, bell towers,
Cathedrals, it bided time, it padded
About, with a ghost’s tread—waiting…. Deep State
Wrapped its claws around the heart’s mulch,
Squeezed…. Blood squirted, oozed…. Death’s cries rattled….

Dr. Gary Steven Corseri is a member of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace, Development and Environment. He has published and posted articles, fiction and poems at hundreds of venues, including, TMS (Transcend Media Service), The New York Times, Village Voice, Redbook Magazine and Counterpunch.
