Night’s Companion — The Charming Moon

Dr. Ravi P. Bhatia – TRANSCEND Media Service

Oh you charming moon – Chandamama
You are a guide when it is night
Come over to this dark land
Lead people from darkness into light

When people went from one land into another
They travelled by boats or ships
Looked to you Moon to guide them on their journey
This is how Portugal came to India early 16th century

They went to several regions, hills
Settled down in Goa and Panaji
But found a bigger catch in Brazil
Teaching the locals to learn Portuguese

Other countries — France looked for a colony in India
Didn’t like the place here, except in Pondicherry
Then went over to Vietnam and Cambodia
Stayed there some years before being shown the Gooseberry

Am I forgetting the biggest of them all — England
They ruled the waves all over the global list
Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand,
America, where they ruled with an iron fist

Crushing any resistance, they ruled the waves and lands
People said the sun never sets over the British empire
he moon always shone beautifully in these regions
Piercing only as it can, the distance, cloud, square

In India, the Moon inspires the lovers
To love and sing as is the fashion
They break traditional boundaries
And ask the Moon to witness their passion

How has the Moon — the lovely Chandamama
Guided me and lead me to inspiration
It has helped me to write these few words
Will help others look towards it with fond devotion
