In recent years debates about U.S. foreign policy have been haunted by the history of the 1940s. Donald Trump resurrected the “America First” slogan, associated with the far right during World War II. As both politicians and historians mine for alternate visions of international order, we must guard against the presumption that the United States remains the benevolent center of global politics.
