La Alta Comisionada de la Organización de Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos, Navi Pillay, calificó de histórica la condena a 80 años de prisión al dictador guatemalteco, José Efraín Ríos Montt.

Pillay celebró que Guatemala hizo historia al convertirse en el primer país en condenar a un dictador por genocidio en una corte nacional.

Al dictador se le imputaron cargos de genocidio y crímenes de lesa humanidad, por ser el responsable de la muerte de mil 771 personas, así como el desplazamiento forzoso de personas, privación de alimentos, tortura, abuso y violencia sexual contra la comunidad maya ixil, durante su régimen desde marzo de 1982 hasta agosto de 1983.

El tribunal determinó que los crímenes fueron cometidos de acuerdo a planes militares dirigidos a exterminar a supuestos enemigos, lo que no sólo incluía grupos guerrilleros, sino también a la población civil ixil, a la que las autoridades golpistas acusaban de apoyar a las organizaciones rebeldes.

Durante los 36 años de guerra civil, unas 200 mil personas perdieron la vida en el país centroamericano y más del 80 por ciento de ellas de origen indígena maya.

El gobierno de facto de Ríos Montt fue uno de los más sangrientos de la guerra civil que sufrió el país durante los años 1960 a 1996 y que dejó 200 mil muertos, según la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU).

En Latinoamérica, se han registrado sangrientos regímenes militares, Ríos Montt es el primer de los dictadores en ser condenado por genocidio. En algunos casos, murieron antes de pagar por sus homicidios, como el general paraguayo Alfredo Stroessner.

Mientas que otros, tras un período de impunidad, fueron procesados por delitos de lesa humanidad, como Jorge Videla (Argentina), Gregorio Alvarez y Juan María Bordaberry (Uruguay) y Alberto Fujimori (Perú). Augusto Pinochet (Chile) murió en arresto domiciliario en 2006 sin haber sido condenado por el exterminio de opositores.
