Condoleezza Rice was going to come to Sweden for a state visit. The Swedish foreign minister, who had to go and greet her on arrival at the airport, did not speak English, and asked someone in his office, “What can I say when she arrives?” “Just say, ‘Welcome to Sweden, how are you?'” he was told.
On the way to the airport, he practiced several times in a singing Swedish tone, “Welcome to Sweden, how are you?” When Rice stepped off the plane, the foreign minister said, “Welcome to Sweden . . .”, but he forgot the rest.
They sat silently next to each other in the limousine downtown, and after about 15 minutes the foreign minister suddenly turned to Rice with a smile and asked, “Who are you?”
