A decisão do presidente estadunidense Barack Obama de iniciar a normalização das relações diplomáticas com Cuba depois de mais de 50 anos, é resultado de mudanças internas e da pressão dos países latino-americanos. É o que apontam especialistas em América Latina, após anúncio de Obama e do presidente cubano Raúl Castro.

A notícia repercutida no mundo inteiro é fruto de negociações secretas entre Washington e Havana, com ajuda fundamental do Papa Francisco. Também tiveram peso a formação de grupos internacionais, como a Celac (Comunidade de Estados Latino-Americanos e do Caribe), e a crescente influência de organizações regionais como a Unasul (União das Nações Sul-Americanas).

A troca de prisioneiros, normalização das relações diplomáticas, viagens facilitadas e flexibilização do bloqueio econômico foram algumas das medidas anunciadas nesta quarta-feira (17).

O embargo econômico, comercial, diplomático e financeiro imposto pelos Estados Unidos a Cuba se iniciou em 1962, após tentativa de invasão do país caribenho e consequente derrubada de Fidel Castro. O embargo é formalmente condenado pelas Nações Unidas e organizações de defesa dos direitos humanos.
