Flying Lessons

A flock of birds that could not fly met in a nice hotel on top of a cliff overlooking the sea for a training workshop on flying.
They were well-fed, with a buffet three times a day, and had lessons in the morning and afternoon. They received a stack of papers explaining step by step how to fly, read them, and then practiced. After some initial short trial flights, they soared up into the air, flew over the edge of the cliff and over the sea, and then landed safely on the ground near the hotel. They enjoyed it tremendously. At the end of the conference, they took their papers under their wing and went home, and never flew again.
It is important to apply what we learn.

Dietrich Fischer, born in 1941 in Münsingen, Switzerland, got a Licentiate in Mathematics from the University of Bern 1968 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University 1976. 1986-88 he was a MacArthur Fellow in International Peace and Security at Princeton University. He has taught mathematics, computer science, economics and peace studies at various universities and been a consultant to the United Nations.
