John Lennon and Paul McCartney heard God Only Knows by The Beach Boys at a party, which inspired them to go back to Lennon’s house and write this wonderful song. Paul McCartney once called God Only Knows “the greatest song ever written.”
McCartney mentioned in the 1989 radio series McCartney on McCartney that the beginning with its ooh-aah backing vocals was meant to have a Beach Boys sound.
