A Swiss farmer’s son was for the first time at a ball. He had heard that you are supposed to carry on some whispered conversation with your partner on the dance floor. He thought long and hard what he could say.
Finally he whispered in his lady’s ear, “Do you like cheese?”
She said, “No.”
He was embarrassed that he had asked the wrong question and was trying to think of something else to say.
After a long while he tried, “Does your brother like cheese?”
“I don’t have any brother,” she replied.
Now he was even more embarrassed. He thought and thought how he might get some conversation going, and finally asked, “Do you suppose, if you had a brother, he might like cheese?”
