Passing Away of Prof. Johan Galtung

21 Feb 2024 – I am deeply saddened to hear of his death.

I first met Prof Galtung when he was a guest lecturer at the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia. This was decades ago, in the eighties. Over the years we interacted a number of times in my homeland, Malaysia, and abroad at conferences.

It goes without saying that he was one of the most outstanding intellectuals of our time. He always had a unique perspective to offer on the great challenges we faced in the last few decades. He had a razor-sharp mind with which he dissected complex issues and conveyed his thoughts to the general public in a simple and straightforward  manner. This was especially true of his contributions in peace studies for which he will always be remembered.

Galtung had enriched knowledge with practical solutions which impacted directly upon the lives of ordinary people. In that sense he helped ease the pain and suffering of his fellow human beings.

May his soul repose among the righteous.
