7 jan 2021 – Em dezembro, durante entrevista à Rádio X, o cantor britânico Robbie Williams revelou que a sua principal motivação para adotar uma dieta à base de vegetais foi descobrir uma séria intoxicação por mercúrio.

“Eu comia peixe duas vezes por dia e tive a maior intoxicação por mercúrio que o médico já viu”, informou.

Enquanto acreditava estar se alimentando da forma mais saudável possível, o cantor não imaginava que os peixes que consumia poderiam concentrar tanto mercúrio.

“Eu poderia ter morrido de envenenamento por mercúrio e arsênio.” A descoberta o motivou a mudar sua alimentação o mais rápido possível. “No dia seguinte, adotei uma dieta à base de vegetais.”

Perigo de consumir peixes contaminados 

De acordo com o estudo “Nutrient and Methyl Mercury Exposure from Consuming Fish”, publicado no Journal of Nutrition da Universidade de Oxford, o consumo de peixes contaminados pode elevar os riscos do aumento de exposição ao mercúrio, que pode acarretar problemas neurológicos.

A pesquisa cita que no Japão o consumo de peixes contaminados com metilmercúrio, elevado pelo comprometimento das águas, já acarretou casos de doenças neurológicas, incluindo retardo mental e microcefalia.
