(Português) Vegano vence ultramaratona de 217 km nos EUA

22 julho 2021 – O corredor vegano Harvey Lewis, de 45 anos, venceu ontem (21 jul) nos EUA a 44ª edição da ultramaratona Badwater 135. Ele concluiu o percurso de 217 quilômetros em 26 horas e cinco minutos, ficando à frente do segundo colocado, o ucraniano Igor Gotsuliak, por quase 30 minutos.

Considerada uma das mais difíceis do mundo, a ultramaratona teve início em Badwater Basin, no Vale da Morte, que está 85 metros abaixo do nível do mar, e terminou no Monte Whitney, também na Califórnia. Para concluir o percurso é preciso atravessar três cadeias de montanhas até o cume mais alto da Serra Nevada.

Vegetariano desde 1996, Harvey Lewis fez a transição para o veganismo em 2016 e atribui o seu bom desempenho e boa recuperação a uma dieta livre de alimentos de origem animal.

À VegNews, Lewis declarou em setembro de 2019 que uma dieta à base de vegetais é o mais importante para ter boas condições de continuar no mundo dos esportes. “Minha saúde, energia e desempenho como corredor mudaram drasticamente.”

Em 2019, o ultramaratonista vegano venceu o 24-Hour National Championship, em Cleveland, Ohio, pela terceira vez depois de percorrer mais de 200 quilômetros. Ele já havia sido bem-sucedido na competição em 2015 e 2017.
