    Bell was a great man–not only as a scientist, but as a humanist. Financially, and with his scientific knowledge, he helped the hearing-impaired and the deaf. When he learned of young (and childish…and prone to fits of despair) Helen Keller’s hardships and cries for help, he arranged for Anne Sullivan (the “miracle worker” in the movie by that name) to meet Helen, reside at her parents’ home, and teach her. Under Anne’s tutelage, deaf-“dumb”-and-blind Helen Keller blossomed into one of the great human beings of the 20th Century. (Mark Twain called her “the pride of the centuries.”)
