The Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict, and Violence (Division 48 of the American Psychological Association) hosted this webinar — “We Must Not Look Away: Resisting Oppression and Pursuing Justice” — on 9 Sep 2025. Our speaker was TRANSCEND Member, Psychologist Roy Eidelson, the President of Division 48 and author of “Doing Harm: How the World’s Largest Psychological Association Lost Its Way in the War on Terror” (McGill-Queens University Press, 2023).
Dr. Eidelson discussed the burgeoning repression of human rights, the escalating threats to vulnerable groups, and the rise of authoritarian leadership. The urgent need for psychologists to play a role in resisting these forces of oppression was highlighted. Focal points also included the ongoing attack on fundamental rights in the United States; the genocidal assault on Gaza; the weaponization of antisemitism; the APA’s misguided choice of expediency over ethics in the “war on terror”; and the necessity of individual and collective action in pursuit of justice and against tyranny today.
Roy Eidelson is a member of the TRANSCEND Network and was a member of the American Psychological Association for over 25 years, prior to his resignation. He is a clinical psychologist and the president of Eidelson Consulting, where he studies, writes about, and consults on the role of psychological issues in political, organizational, and group conflict settings. He is a past president of Psychologists for Social Responsibility, former executive director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Solomon Asch Center for Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict, and a member of the Coalition for an Ethical Psychology. Roy is the author of Political Mind Games: How the 1% Manipulate Our Understanding of What’s Happening, What’s Right, and What’s Possible and can be reached at reidelson@eidelsonconsulting.com.
