Global Military Expenditure Sees Largest Annual Increase in a Decade Reaching US$ 1.917 Trillion in 2019

27 April 2020 – Total global military expenditure rose to US$ 1.917 trillion in 2019, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The total for 2019 represents an increase of 3.6 per cent from 2018 and the largest annual growth in spending since 2010. The five largest spenders in 2019, which accounted for 62 per cent of expenditure, were the United States, China, India, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Increase in Arms Transfers Driven by Demand in the Middle East and Asia

The flow of arms increased to Asia and Oceania and the Middle East between 2007–11 and 2012–16, while there was a decrease in the flow to Europe, the Americas and Africa. The five biggest exporters—the United States, Russia, China, France and Germany—together accounted for 74 per cent of the total volume of arms exports.

16 Mar 2015 – The United States has taken a firm lead as the major arms exporter globally according to new data on international arms transfers published today. Overall, the volume of international transfers of major conventional weapons grew by 16 per cent between 2005–2009 and 2010–14.

World Nuclear Forces—Reductions and Modernization Continue

3 June 2013 – At the start of 2013 eight states—the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan and Israel—possessed approximately 4400 operational nuclear weapons. Nearly 2000 of these are kept in a state of high operational alert. If all nuclear warheads are counted, these states together possess a total of approximately 17 265 nuclear weapons.
