UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the General Assembly at the start of this week [27 Sep 2012] that “the door may be closing for good on a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.” The truth of history, which most if not all world leaders know but dare not state, is that the door Ban Ki-moon sees closing, was actually slammed shut 45 years ago. The precise date of the closure was 22 November 1967. What happened on that day?

Apollo’s Curse and Climate Change
Richard Falk – TRANSCEND Media Service, 1 Oct 2012

The sad story of Cassandra is suggestive of the dilemma confronting the climate change scientific community. In modern civilization, interpreting scientific evidence and projecting trends, is as close to trustworthy prophesy as this civilization is likely to get. The culture is supposed to place its highest trust in the scientific community as the voice of reason, and modernity is largely understood as allowing scientific truth and instrumental reason to supersede superstition and religious revelation.

How unfortunate it would be if tens of thousands of lives were lost as well.

Origins of Israel Palestinian Conflict
CaspianReport – TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Sep 2012

The Israeli Arab conflict is the result of interactions of superpowers in the early 20th century. British and French strategic interests in the Middle East were related to the Mediterranean trading route, which went from the Suez channel to Indian markets. But the presence of the Ottoman navy based in the Levant was a direct threat to British interests. So the British and the French decided to divide the Middle East into smaller entities and countries to make it impossible for the Ottoman Empire to control them all. A century later, the legacy of European colonization of the Arab world is reflected by its many ongoing conflicts.

Like millions of my fellow Buddhist Burmese, I grew up as a proud racist. For much of my life growing up in the heartland of Burma, Mandalay, I mistook what I came to understand years later as racism to be the patriotism of Burmese Buddhists. Our leading and most powerful institutions, schools, media, Buddhist church and, most importantly, the military, have succeeded in turning the bulk of us into proud racists.

No ‘Red Line’ for Israel
Gilad Atzmon – TRANSCEND Media Service, 17 Sep 2012

Israeli news outlets reported today [15 Sep 2012] that President Obama rejected an appeal by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to set a specific “red line” to stop any further Iranian uranium enrichment. It seems that, this time at least, President Obama has decided against launching a world war on behalf of the Jewish State and its powerful lobby.

The Democrats’ Jerusalem Arithmetic: When Israel Is Concerned, Half = Two-Thirds
Alison Weir, IfAmericansKnew – TRANSCEND Media Service, 17 Sep 2012

We’re Tired of Pretend Democracy – Not often is a political fix so public. The Democratic committee that develops the party’s campaign platform recently failed to include the apparently obligatory “Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel” pronouncement. In fact, I believe an uprising in the United States may be coming. People are tired of wars and killing, and of being sold a pack of goods by both parties using lies, deception, and manipulation.

SABONA: From Kindergarten to Geopolitics
Johan Galtung - TRANSCEND Media Service, 17 Sep 2012

Some global bullies invented a new play: the nuclear game. One child had the monopoly for some time, refusing to give it up to that big kindergarten called the UN. Then other children came, and more, and more. What to do? Give all the weapons to the UN for destruction and then celebrate their demise from earth.

Paradoxes of Turkish Pride
Richard Falk – TRANSCEND Media Service, 17 Sep 2012

Turkey is now an important middle power at the United Nations. It provides a diplomatic venue for many international events that used to be held in Europe. Its courageous Somalia initiative has given Turkey a post-colonial identity in Africa that no other non-African government has been able to achieve. It is my belief that Turkey more than any other country in the 21st century has increased its relevance to the conduct of regional and global politics.

The Future of International Law
John Scales Avery – TRANSCEND Media Service, 17 Sep 2012

It is becoming increasingly clear that the concept of the absolutely sovereign nation-state is a dangerous anachronism in a world of thermonuclear weapons, instantaneous communication, and economic interdependence. Probably our best hope for the future lies in developing the United Nations into a World Federation.

A Tale of Two Asylums: Assange, Palacio, and Media Hypocrisy
Keane Bhatt, NACLA – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2012

Every so often, world affairs offer us paired examples—two nearly identical instances through which we can better understand the role of powerful institutions, like the media. So when Ecuador granted asylum to Australian journalist Julian Assange in mid-August [2012], and then, two weeks later, the United States provided asylum to Ecuadorian journalist Emilio Palacio, the two cases laid bare the hypocrisy of the establishment press.

The Liberal Way to Run the World – ‘Improve’ or We’ll Kill You
John Pilger – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2012

In his 1859 essay On Liberty, to which modern liberals pay homage, John Stuart Mill described the power of empire. “Despotism is a legitimate mode of government in dealing with barbarians,” he wrote, “provided the end be their improvement, and the means justified by actually effecting that end.” The “barbarians” were large sections of humanity of whom “implicit obedience” was required.

Is Amnesty International Abandoning Human Rights?
Bev Cotton – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2012

“Amnesty International is primarily motivated not by human rights but by publicity. Second comes money… To be sure, if you are dealing with a human rights situation in a country that is at odds with the United States or Britain, it gets an awful lot of attention… But if it’s dealing with violations of human rights by the United States, Britain, Israel, then it’s like pulling teeth to get them to really do something on the situation”.

Robert Redford – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2012

From September 6-15 [2012], some 10,000 environmentalists gather in Jeju Island for the International Union of the Conservation of Nature’s World Conservation Congress. It will take place where the construction of a naval base is threatening coral forests, assaulting endangered species and destroying a 400-year old community of farmers and fishers. But instead of condemning the South Korean government’s actions, IUCN Director-General Julia Marton-Lafevre praised its seriously flawed “Environmental Impact Assessment.” This naval base is being built just 0.13 miles from a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Tiger Island.

Targeting Civilians
John Scales Avery – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2012

Much was destroyed during World War II, and among the casualties of the war were the ethical principles that Roosevelt and Chamberlain announced at its outset. We live at a special time in history, a time of crisis for civilization. We did not ask to be born at a moment of crisis, but such is our fate. Every person now alive has a special responsibility: We owe it, both to our ancestors and to future generations, to build a stable and cooperative future world.
