The Royal Double Bind

Being born into or marrying into a Royal Family thrusts one into a double bind. Double bind theory, from my family therapy training in the 1970s, regards the dilemma of being confronted with conflicting, irreconcilable demands — one negating the other. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. One can neither resolve the dilemma nor opt out of the situation.

Skill and creativity are required to transcend the double bind, both in family therapy and in the field of conflict transformation.
