Strategic Embodiment of Time: Configuring Questions Fundamental to Change
Anthony Judge – TRANSCEND Media Service,

With respect to the global financial crisis, Sohail Inayatullah has presented a set of seven narratives derived by use of Causal Layered Analysis (Multiple Narratives of the Futures of the Global Financial Crisis, Journal of Futures Studies, 2010). The possibility explored here is that there are implicit questions associated with each of these foundational or generative narratives which could be considered in the light of the classical set of seven WH-questions (when, where, which, what, who, why, how).

The brightly coloured ute stood out in the traffic crawling through the historic Indonesian city of Yogyakarta.

And these are not good wars, in the sense of clear-cut wars of Good against Evil. The goals of USA-West, beyond suppressing “insurrection”, seem to include revenge, pure paranoia, clear economic interests, getting bases for future wars that may also be far from “good”. The goals of the enemy, defined by the US-West as Evil, are often very badly understood or not at all. These are not winnable wars. Like the English experienced 19 April 1775, being attacked by an invisible American enemy on the Boston-Concord road fighting “like savages”: savages have a tendency to win, even it may take time. “Asymmetric war” is in their favor, fighting for sacred values, freedom, human rights, ready to sacrifice their lives, with unlimited time perspective.

Peace Civil Interventions: The Nonviolent Peaceforce from a Historical Perspective
Marco Oberosler (Submitted by Antonino Drago) – TRANSCEND Media Service,

During the twentieth century a considerable number of civilian interventions has taken place in armed conflicts. Gandhi himself envisioned a Shanti Sena (literally Peace Army). His suggestion was later put into practice in India thanks to Vinoba Bhave and Jayaprakash Narayan; in Western countries it has taken the shape of a recurrent vision that promoted recurrent actions within the Peace Movement.

The forthcoming “Debunking the War on Terror” symposium in London brings together four of the most outspoken and eloquent challengers to the Zio-American imperial order that has emerged post-September 11th. While most of the left and antiwar movements have chosen to remain “loyal opposition,” each of these four individuals has gone one step further, by challenging the very roots of the mainstream Western consensus and accepting the physical, professional or intellectual exile that ensues. If the consensus is starting to shift, it is due in large part to such bold challenges as these.

In accordance with the Natural Law there is a cause and a purpose behind every disaster that takes place. This includes the tragic oil disaster that took place in the Gulf of Mexico during the spring 2010. Needless to say, the cause of such a tragic disaster was due to a serious drilling leak, which popped up deep down at the bottom of this huge sea that was operated by British Petroleum, commonly known as BP. After more than two months the oil is still leaking amounting to thousands of barrels a day.

The theme of the demo is ‘Give Peace a Chance’. It is – as far as we know – a world first, being a demonstration in favour of peace journalism. In our book of the same name, Annabel McGoldrick and I define peace journalism in these terms: “Peace journalism is when editors and reporters make choices – of what stories to report, and how to report them – that create opportunities for society at large to consider and value non-violent responses to conflict”. Such choices are subjugated, in most media, most of the time, by journalistic conventions: conventions that grow out of the economic and political interests of the news industry. This is why, as Richard Keeble argues, “We need to move away from the concept of the audience as a passive consumer of a professional product to seeing the audience as producers of their own (written or visual) media”.

On Saturday 5th June, 2010, thirty five heavily armed Israeli navy seals commandeered our boat, MV Rachel Corrie, one of the Freedom Flotilla, in international waters (30 miles off the coast of Gaza). As they did so we, nineteen humanitarian activists and crew, were on the deck. We were quietly anxious, aware of the solitary figure in the wheelhouse with his hands held high against the window, in full view of the three Israeli warships, four approaching zodiacs and two commando carriers, whose guns were pointing in his direction. I personally wondered if the courageous Derek Graham would live to tell the tale, conscious of what happened on the Turkish ship, Mavi Marmara, earlier in the week.

The modern means of technology that were developed over the past several decades made our planet Earth become much smaller. Besides, what one nation may do for the better or the worse may eventually affect other nations as well. This explains, in part, why today we ended up facing so many insurmountable problems all of which may be solved if we were to take the appropriate approach.

It is conceptualized by Moser and Clark (2001) very succinctly as the collective sphere manifested in “guerrilla conflict, para-military conflict, political assassinations, armed conflict between political parties, rape and sexual abuse as a political act and forced pregnancy/sterilization. It is a collective effort to impose or resist power and it is driven by intention or the will to power of a specific group, class, religion, gender, etc.

However, at the present stage, CICA members need to work in tandem towards playing an active role in the Eurasian space towards building peace and stability. Issues like ‘extremism, terrorism, drug trafficking, the threat of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and maritime piracy’ will likely goad CICA members to play a collective role in tackling these issues of common concern.

In a world much characterized by denial in many forms, distinct cases may be made for exploring “undersides” or the “unconscious”, as variously argued (Elise Boulding, The Underside of History: a view of women through time, 1976; John Ralston Saul, The Unconscious Civilization, 1995), most notably by Carl Jung with respect to the collective unconscious and the individual “shadow”, as previously argued (Global Strategic Implications of the Unsaid: from myth-making towards a wisdom society, 2003). The case may be extended to various forms of “Omertà”, perhaps most recently and dramatically illustrated by the policies of the Catholic Church with respect to sexual abuse by clergy, widespread concern with the secrecy of tax havens, or the scientific neglect of a particular factor in consideration of climate change policy (Mapping the Global Underground: articulating Insightful Population Constraint Consideration, 2010; Sins of Hot Air Emission, Omission, Commission and Promission, 2009).

It continues the exploration of the possibility of providing a common framework for the huge global investment in weaponry — and the binary logic associated with its use — in relation to a variety of other more complex games and non-weaponised modes of interaction.

Israel’s attacks on humanitarian workers heading for Gaza have been called piracy, murder, ‘state terrorism’, even an act of war against the countries whose flags the boats were flying. On the other side has been a massive and cynical campaign of misinformation and misdirection, aimed at muddying the waters and deflecting responsibility.

Therefore what is troubling the hearts and souls of non-Americans in NATO HQ is this fundamental question. Is NATO genuinely a mutual defence organisation, or is it just an instrument to carry out US foreign policy? With its unthinking defence of Israel and military occupation of Afghanistan, is US foreign policy really defending Europe, or is it making the World less safe by causing Islamic militancy?

The PLO hijacking of the Achille Lauro p in 1986 in an attempt to free Palestinian political prisoners held illegally in Israeli prisons is held up as an act of terrorism. However, it can be argued, and correctly in my legal opinion, that the actual and continuing occupation and colonization of Palestine itself is the original and continuing crime. Resistance to conquest is not, and cannot be defined, as criminal. However, if the West considered that it was an act of terrorism, how should we now describe this latest Israeli attack? It can, and should, be defined as the very epitome of a double terrorism: the first act of terror is the use of military force on the high seas, while the second act of terror is the use of this illegitimate force against hors de combat unarmed civilians!

Israel offered to sell the apartheid regime, weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical and conventional weaponry to destroy and defeat the million person African resistance movement.

In 1846-48 the USA conquered 53% of the Mexican territory in a terrible war; the USA says it was 33%. Today a fifth of the Mexicans live in the USA, legally or not; 53% of them would mean 30 million more in the USA. Far too much, says Arizona in the anti-illegal immigration law, denounced by Calderón as threat to human rights and democracy. Obama, to the right of Bush, sends 1,200 soldiers to the border; with 1 million Americans now living in Mexico, mainly close to beaches, to stretch meager pensions…. Meanwhile, Hugo Chávez was on CNN-Español and claimed that during his presidency Venezuelan poverty dropped from 73% to 40%, and misery from 23% to 5%. Given his social policy it might simply be true, or close to it. So much more important than GNP growth. And threatened by Obama’s seven bases in Colombia, and the Fourth Fleet. And yet the voice of the future.

Instead of welcoming this notable effort to reduce regional tensions, the Brazilian/Turkish initiative was immediately branded as an amateurish irrelevance by the American Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton. Worth reading? I guess it depends on your understanding of the relevance of US policy and strategy on the world stage. On the other hand it is relatively easy to argue that US national security strategy must always be taken into account and give due respect. In these very delicate times, and with increasing polarization in the media and public dialogue a strong point can be made in favor of having a look at the actual text of the strategy document – but as always, actions speak much louder than any policy statement.
