A Blast From the Past: The Non-Aligned Movement
Eric Margolis – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2012

In spite of intense efforts by the US and Israel to deter attendance at the Tehran meeting – backed by a wave of western media attacks on the conclave – over 150 nations and international bodies attended. This big turnout marked a major failure by Washington to further tighten its siege of Iran. Of particular note was the presence of India’s prime minister, Manmohan Singh, and of Egypt’s new president, Mohammed Morsi, who shrugged off threats of a cut in US aid and flew to Tehran.

A Step towards the Dock
George Monbiot – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2012

The prospect of a trial for Tony Blair now starts to look more plausible. When Desmond Tutu wrote that Tony Blair should be treading the path to the Hague, he de-normalised what Blair has done. Tutu broke the protocol of power – the implicit accord between those who flit from one grand meeting to another – and named his crime. I expect that Blair will never recover from it.

A Tale of Two Economies: Skyrocketing Stock Market for the Rich, Devaluation of Work for the Rest
Mark Karlin - Truthout, 10 Sep 2012

The rich are making out like bandits in the booming Wall Street economy that is based on profits squeezed out of firing workers, lowering net wages (adjusted for inflation), and outsourcing jobs to exploited labor overseas. There is no crisis in the top 1%; there is only increasing wealth.

An All-Clear for Bush’s Torturers
Marjorie Cohn – Comsortium News, 10 Sep 2012

Even as Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu urges a war-crimes trial for George Bush and Tony Blair for invading Iraq, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder gives an all-clear to Bush’s subordinates for homicides that resulted from torture in Afghanistan and Iraq, a repudiation of U.S. law and principles.

Transforming and Interweaving the Ways of Being Stoned
Anthony Judge – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2012

“Stone” is used metaphorically and otherwise in a quite disparate range of contexts. Use of “stoned” as a provocative mnemonic device is then arguably appropriate through the distraction it offers, whether through use of drugs by individuals, or collective dependence on oil as a drug. The exorbitant expenditure on the occasion of global summits is also suggestive of the “stoned” conditions under which it is deemed appropriate for decision-makers to envision the future.

Well, he was born in Soviet Moldavia and speaks Russian fluently. Even though he came to Israel already 34 years ago, just a few days after his 20th birthday, he is still considered by most Israelis as a “Russian”, speaking Hebrew with a heavy Russian accent and looking as foreign as possible. He is an ardent admirer of Vladimir Putin and his Doppelgängers, Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk and Victor Yanukovych in Kiev.

Elephants Dying in Epic Frenzy as Ivory Fuels Wars and Profits
Jeffrey Gettleman – The New York Times, 10 Sep 2012

This is the first installment in a series of articles that will explore how the surge in poaching of African elephants both feeds off and fuels instability on the continent. In 30 years of fighting poachers, Paul Onyango had never seen anything like this. Twenty-two dead elephants, including several very young ones, clumped together on the open savanna, many killed by a single bullet to the top of the head.

A series of some five million emails, The Global Intelligence Files, were obtained as a result of last year’s hack by Anonymous of the Texas-based “global intelligence” firm Stratfor. Why America and Israel Are the Greatest Threats to Peace
Noam Chomsky - AlterNet, 10 Sep 2012

There are simply too many watchmen and too much infiltration of terrorist groups for such a complex attack to be prepared undetected and carried out undeterred.

Conspiracies: Theories and Hypotheses
Johan Galtung, 27 Aug 2012 - TRANSCEND Media Service, 27 Aug 2012

Conspiracies exist. They are a part of social reality, have always been, and will always be; as confirmed conspiracy theories, as unconfirmed conspiracy hypotheses, as suspicions, as allegations. The conspiracy-labeling carries all the characteristics of a conspiracy, using the cultural power of the media to steer the discourse away from important issues. Unacceptable.

Paul Ryan and the Fountainhead
Uri Avnery – TRANSCEND Media Service, 27 Aug 2012

I was not interested in Paul Ryan, the man about to be nominated by the Republican party for the office of vice-president, until the name Ayn Rand popped up. Ayn Rand, it was said, was one of the main inspirations for his particular philosophy. Since Ryan is being represented not as an ordinary, run-of-the-mill politician, like Mitt Romney, but as a profound political and economic thinker, the inspiration deserves some scrutiny.

It needs to be appreciated that Turkey viewed from outside by most informed observers, especially in the region, remains a shining success story, both economically and politically. Nothing could bring more hope and pride to the region than for the Turkish ascent to be achieved elsewhere, of course, allowing for national variations of culture, history, and resource endowments, but sharing the commitment to build an inclusive democracy in which the military stays in the barracks and the diplomats take pride in resolving and preventing conflicts.

Experts continue to praise Iceland’s recovery success after the country’s bank bailouts of 2008. Unlike the US and several countries in the eurozone, Iceland allowed its banking system to fail in the global economic downturn and put the burden on the industry’s creditors rather than taxpayers.

The Invisible Majority: Married Girls in the Somali Refugee Camps
Ashley Lackovich-van Gorp – TRANSCEND Media Service, 27 Aug 2012

Marriage does not turn a 12-year-old girl into a woman. The 2003 World Health Organization, United Nations Population Fund and Population Council report, “Married Adolescents: An Overview,” reveals that in comparison with unmarried peers, married girls have less education, less mobility, less exposure to the media and less access to social networks and basic services (25-34).

The Pursuit of Julian Assange Is an Assault on Freedom and a Mockery of Journalism
John Pilger – TRANSCEND Media Service, 27 Aug 2012

The British government’s threat to invade the Ecuadorean embassy in London and seize Julian Assange is of historic significance. The same brave newspapers and broadcasters that have supported Britain’s part in epic bloody crimes, from the genocide in Indonesia to the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, now attack the “human rights record” of Ecuador, whose real crime is to stand up to the bullies in London and Washington.

The Protection Racket
John Scales Avery – TRANSCEND Media Service, 27 Aug 2012

One is reminded of the feudal system of the Middle Ages, in which industrious peasants paid for “protection” with a large fraction of their produce. Their gangster-like protectors, the knights and barons, did no useful work. All they did was to fight with each other. How much is it exactly that we pay today for “protection”? The total world military budgets cost us 1.7 trillion dollars each year, that is to say, 1,700,000,000,000 dollars, an amount of money almost too large to be imagined. What do we get for this? We do not get anything useful. We get war, a universal source of poverty, destruction of infrastructure, and human suffering.
