Violence in the Institutional and Cultural DNA of the United States of America
Maung Zarni – TRANSCEND Media Service, 31 Dec 2012

The two of the three pillars of the United States were the ethno- and genocide of the native people and the enslavement of African people — yes, the other is honorably the Enlightenment ideals of equality (of property-owning while males). Both as an economic system and as an ideological edifice, USA is one of the most violent places on earth.

Matt Taibbi: How Did HSBC Executives Avoid Jail?
Democracy NOW! – TRANSCEND Media Service, 31 Dec 2012

The banking giant HSBC has escaped indictment for laundering billions of dollars for Mexican drug cartels and groups linked to al-Qaeda. Taibbi says. “Here we have a bank that laundered $800 million dollars of drug money and they can’t find a way to put anybody in jail for that? That sends an incredible message, not just to the financial sector, but to everybody. It’s an obvious, clear double standard where one set of people gets to break the rules as much as they want and another set of people can’t break any rules at all without going to jail.”

A Request to Dissolve the Indian Parliament
The People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy – TRANSCEND Media Service, 31 Dec 2012

We, the following citizens of India, have just completed 500 days of our peaceful protest against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project. Although our people have been struggling peacefully and nonviolently and democratically for 500 days, the Central government and the State government have not given our struggle its due importance or serious consideration to our demands. Instead they persist with their plan of commissioning the project at any cost just to please their Russian, American and French masters.

The Paradox of Cuban Agriculture
Miguel Altieri and Fernando Funes-Monzote – Monthly Review, 31 Dec 2012

When Cuba faced the shock of lost trade relations with the Soviet Bloc in the early 1990s, food production initially collapsed due to the loss of imported fertilizers, pesticides, tractors, parts, and petroleum. The situation was so bad that Cuba posted the worst growth in per capita food production in all of Latin America and the Caribbean. But the island rapidly re-oriented its agriculture to depend less on imported synthetic chemical inputs, and became a world-class case of ecological agriculture.

The template of response has become a national liturgy in light of the dismal pattern of public response: media sensationalism of a totalizing kind, at once enveloping, sentimental, and tasteless (endless interviewing of surviving children and teachers, and even family members of victims), but dutifully avoiding deeper questions relating to guns, violence, and cultural stimulants and conditioning.

Enactivating Multiversal Community: Hearing a Pattern of Voices in the Global Wilderness

This clearly avoids any face-to-face interaction in the moment, as is suggested by the possibility which is the focus here. It is appropriate to note that the preparation and publication of scientific papers may also be considered as a mode of “discourse”, most notably within the scientific community. Scientific “debate” may well be associated with a succession of rounds of mutually critical paper publication — possibly over years.

What Will UN Recognition Mean for Palestine?
Socialist Worker, editorial – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Dec 2012

The upheavals across the Middle East have helped the cause of Palestinian liberation. The potential for Palestinians to achieve much more than “nonmember observer status” at the UN is much clearer today–and should inspire all our struggles for justice and freedom, in the Middle East and around the world.

It’s Time for the Media to Talk about Zionism
Philip Weiss – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Dec 2012

American media are not talking to their readers about Zionism, the ideology that is at the heart of the problem in Israel and Palestine. The media are honest about other movements of a religious character, from evangelism to opposition to stem-cell research to radical Islam. So they should be honest with them about Zionism.

Mr. President, Tear Down This Wall
Pepe Escobar – TomDispatch, 10 Dec 2012

On entering the Oval Office in Jan 2009, President Obama inherited a seemingly impregnable three-decade-long “Wall of Mistrust” in Iran-U.S. relations. To his credit, that March he directly addressed all Iranians in a message for Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, calling for an “engagement that is honed and grounded in mutual respect.” Now, with the campaign Sturm und Drang behind us but the threats still around, the question is: Can Obama 2.0 bridge the gap between current U.S. policy and Persian optics?

(Italiano) ONU: Due Imperi in Crollo – E Poi Che Cosa?
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Dec 2012

A Navy psychiatrist who treated Manning testified that his medical recommendations were consistently ignored by commanders. A UN investigation last spring described Manning’s conditions as “cruel” and “inhuman.” But the first rule about denial is that no one talks about denial.
