Since the cause of this crisis is the widespread violence in Syria, we call for an immediate end of all aid – lethal and nonlethal – to all combatants, an immediate and mutual ceasefire, and immediate negotiations among all the parties without preconditions. Lebanese citizens, Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon, Lebanese charitable institutions and other Lebanese civil society institutions deserve much credit for providing support that the international society has not done. However, a refugee influx of this magnitude is more than any society the size of Lebanon can accommodate without aid from the UN.

Foreign interference is currently preventing the Syrian people from exercising their right to self-determination. We are concerned that such pernicious intervention is tearing apart the fabric of the country itself, with long-term consequences that can only be imagined. The cautionary example of Iraq serves to remind us of the dire consequences of such international folly.

Like Paul meeting the angel Ananias on his way to Damascus experienced a change of heart and became St Paul, so have I met many angels on my own Road to Damascus and, although not gone into sainthood, I have reinterpreted and upgraded my own vision of reality—which I now share with you.

I participated, May 1-11, 2013, in a Peace Delegation to Lebanon-Syria, along with fellow TRANSCEND member Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire and 15 others from six countries. I shall report next week on what I saw, heard and witnessed along with my own conclusions and insights from interviews (including with armed rebels), audiences (incl. Prime Minister, four others), visits to hospitals, refugee camps, churches and mosques. I talked with a member of the political opposition to Assad’s regime. He was in prison for 24 years (out for 11) and wants changes—but without outside interference.

We are meant by nature, the universe, life itself (let’s leave the gods out of this) to be superior beings, elevated in virtue, goodness, righteousness, integrity, ethics, honesty, morality, uprightness, evolved consciousness, and not merely to get richer, smarter, sexier, more cunning, and more knowledgeable to dominate everything and everybody we contemplate-if possible by force. This is the real danger, the aspect that could prompt these smarter, more aggressive (meaning less civilized) people in power to explode the planet through a nuclear war, thus creating a second asteroid belt.

We understand that just between September and December 2011, complaints were registered against more than 55,000 people in just one police station – the Koodankulam police station.

To criticize Israel’s current foreign policy is not anti-Semitic, but a part of democratic debate. Johan Galtung, like many others, is the proponent of a prosperous and peaceful Israel, in peace with all its neighbors. He has a concrete proposal, first time made public in 1971: A Middle East Community of Israel with its five Arab neighbors, modeled after the European Community of the Treaty of Rome, which went into effect in 1958. This very proposal was published by Akiva Eldar in Ha’aretz in 2007 under the title “Ingredients for a True Peace Process.”

This hunger strike is a protest against unjust arrest procedures, arbitrary detention and bad prison conditions.

Mairead Corrigan Maguire, who was awarded the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize for her work in Northern Ireland, invited to attend the Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Chicago, has canceled her trip because of a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the State Department is an Active Partner in the summit. The Nobel Summit is hooked up to the NATO Summit in Chicago. Critics of the Nobel Prize and of NATO applauded Maguire’s decision:

On March 19, 2012, the Indian government gave approval for operation of two Russian-designed nuclear reactors at Kudankulam in southern India. These reactors have been under construction since 1988 and are obsolete before they even start up. The Russell Tribunal on Palestine will convene in District Six, Cape Town, site of a brutal apartheid-era forced removal. The land has remained undeveloped on the edge of the city since it was declared “a white group area” and the homes of black residents were demolished in the 1970s. The Cape Town session of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine – to be held on 5-6 November 2011 – will consider whether Israel’s treatment of the Palestinian people fits the international legal definitions of the crime of apartheid.
