NATO is the US dominated global war machine whose policy is ‘Full Spectrum Dominance.’ Contrary to its claims, NATO is not a defensive organization but an instrument for US world domination to prevent all challenges to its hegemony. It should have been disbanded in 1991 after the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact but instead expanded into fifteen new countries.

25 Nov 2021 – It was with deep sadness that on 23 Nov the world watched in horror the news that 27 people had drowned in the English Channel when their flimsy dinghy overturned attempting to cross from Calais to Dover. I am sorry and I ask the forgiveness of migrants and refugees who have been forced to flee their lands. I send my condolences to the families at the loss of their beloved ones in a cold watery tragedy far away from their homes.

The war cost hundreds of thousands of lives with the USA spending US $2 trillion, little of which went to improve the lives of Afghan people, many of whom are hungry, homeless and living in poverty. Our love, prayers and thoughts go out to the people of Afghanistan who have suffered so much.

I am very hopeful for the future as I believe if we can reject militarism in its entirety as the aberration/dysfunction it is in human history, and all of us who no matter what area of change we work in, can unite and agree we want to see a demilitarized unarmed world. We can do this together. Let us remember in human history, people abolished slavery, piracy, we can abolish militarism and war, and relegate these barbaric ways into the dustbin of history.

It is with deep sadness that I heard of the death of my dear friend and co-peace worker Ciaran McKeown on 1 Sep 2019. When the Peace People started in Aug l976 at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland, it was Ciaran, a political journalist, who courageously took the peace leadership–giving up his job and becoming a volunteer in spite of the fact that his fifth child was soon due–and joined myself and Betty Williams in co-founding the Peace People. One young woman, Fatima (20), told us how Myanmar soldiers entered their village and came into her home. They shot her husband, made her carry her six month- old baby girl down to the lake where they threw the child into the pond and drowned her. They took Fatima back to her home; several soldiers held her down and constantly raped her until she became unconscious. They carried her outside to the field where they left her for dead. The foreign policy of the US/UK governments were for regime change and about Iraqi oil, and the method used were genocidal sanctions, wars and invasion of Iraq. The ‘shock and awe’ bombings of unarmed civilians by US/UK/allied forces was not about bringing democracy and human rights to Iraq, it was about regime change, oil, imperial power, arms and total destruction of infrastructure and starvation into submission of Iraq women and children.

If our common dream is a world without weapons and militarism, why don’t we say so? Why be silent about it? It would make a world of difference if we refused to be ambivalent about the violence of militarism. We should no longer be scattered attempts to modify the military, each one of us would do our thing as part of a global effort. Across all divisions of national borders, religions, races. We must be an alternative, insisting on an end to militarism and violence.

I visited Syria in May 2013. Despite the ongoing violence, I found it to be a land of hope. I met tribal and religious leaders, political dissidents and grieving parents and widows. In Syria there are millions of ordinary folk risking their lives for a peaceful, reconciled and united Syria they can all love.

We will be visiting Kabul on 10th December 2012, international day of human rights, on behalf of the Peace People. We have been invited by Afghan peace volunteers to join them in their ‘2 million friends’ and ‘ceasefire’ campaign and we will join the voices for creative nonviolence delegation USA, to Afghanistan. The Afghan peace volunteers have chosen to ask for two million friends around the world remembering that in the last 40 years over 2 million Afghan people have died from violence.

This was being launched simultaneously in four countries: Colombia, Kenya, Burma and the DRC in May, 2012.

Although the world’s media have given it scant attention, it is important for all of us to follow the nonviolent mass resistance movement against the nuclear power plant construction in Koodankulam village, Tamil Nadu, India. It has built up steadily into a nonviolent mass action, with about 10,000 people resisting the imposition of the plant in their backyard. The leader of the movement faces 98 spurious charges including sedition, treason, terrorism and attempted murder.

It was reported on Monday [12 Jul 2010] that an Israeli military commission found “no failure” on the part of the commandos who took part in the attack. And while the UN Security Council and human rights groups called for an independent and “credible” inquiry into the matter, there are no such plans in the works. Israel has deemed such independent efforts as “anti-Israel” and a threat to the existence of the state. The result? The US and indeed the rest of the international community stand on the sidelines, doing nothing. On June 5, I was aboard the MV Rachel Corrie—a ship named for a young American activist who was bulldozed to death by the Israeli army in 2003—heading to Gaza. Just days earlier, we had heard via satellite phone that Israeli commandos had boarded six ships, including the Turkish MV Mavi Marmara, in international water, and had killed and injured many aboard.

On Saturday 5th June, 2010, thirty five heavily armed Israeli navy seals commandeered our boat, MV Rachel Corrie, one of the Freedom Flotilla, in international waters (30 miles off the coast of Gaza). As they did so we, nineteen humanitarian activists and crew, were on the deck. We were quietly anxious, aware of the solitary figure in the wheelhouse with his hands held high against the window, in full view of the three Israeli warships, four approaching zodiacs and two commando carriers, whose guns were pointing in his direction. I personally wondered if the courageous Derek Graham would live to tell the tale, conscious of what happened on the Turkish ship, Mavi Marmara, earlier in the week.
