Johan Galtung | Centro Studi Sereno Regis – TRANSCEND Media Service, 18 Mar 2024

Globalizing God: Religion and Peace in the Social Sciences
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 18 Mar 2024

Hard readings lead to intolerance or grudging tolerance. Badly needed: respect and curiosity; dialogue and mutual learning. There is so much wisdom! Select! Eclect! Go beyond state-territorial and national-cultural borders, and transcend those jealously guarded borders in the mind, between disciplines and religions.

Israel at Seventy Six
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Mar 2024

Israel is celebrating its 76th anniversary of David Ben Gurion’s unilateral declaration of independence. And the bill for shoa is increasingly placed at the feet of Arabs in general, the Palestinians in particular, starting with al naqba, the horror of 711,000 chased out of their homes in Palestine, to camps, diasporas. To death. [Leading to the 2024 Genocide.]

Johan Galtung | Centro Studi Sereno Regis –TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Mar 2024

Conflict Transformation as a Way of Life
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 26 Feb 2024

If you cannot remove conflict, why not adjust your thinking about it? Why not try and see conflict as the salt of life, the big energizer, the tickler, the tantalizer, rather than as a bothersome nuisance, as noise in perfect channel, as disturbing ripples in otherwise quiet waters?

(Italiano) Spiritualità e lavoro sui conflitti
Johan Galtung | Centro Studi Sereno Regis –TRANSCEND Media Service, 19 Feb 2024

Spirituality and Conflict Work
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 12 Feb 2024

The West has rejected religion under enlightenment-modernity-secularism, and is now experiencing some rebirth of religion.  Spirituality then enters as an over-arching concept, building on elements in most religions and on secular values. World power now moves from a spiritually poor Occident to a richer Orient.

(Italiano) Il mondo oltre il disordine globale
Johan Galtung | Centro Studi Sereno Regis –TRANSCEND Media Service, 5 Feb 2024

Some Perspectives on Veterans of Current Wars
Prof. Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 8 Jan 2024

These are not clear-cut good wars of Good against Evil. The goals of USA-West, beyond suppressing “insurrection”, include revenge, paranoia, economic interests, getting bases for future wars far from “good”. The goals of an enemy defined by US-West as Evil, are often badly understood or not at all.

(Italiano) Come finiscono le guerre?
Johan Galtung | Centro Studi Sereno Regis –TRANSCEND Media Service, 27 Nov 2023

How Do Wars End?
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 20 Nov 2023

They would shoot at the enemy column from behind fences, trees, barns, walls, from inside houses. This was a strange, new type of warfare to the British, neither experienced nor trained for it.  To them it seemed dishonorable, hiding and shooting at men in the open who could not even see their enemies.  A Redcoat wrote his family: “They did not fight us like a regular army, only like savages.”

(Italiano) Palestina e Israele: come sarebbe la pace
Johan Galtung | Centro Studi Sereno Regis –TRANSCEND Media Service, 30 Oct 2023

Palestine/Israel: What Peace Would Look Like
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Oct 2023

Johan Galtung’s insights are crucially relevant today in view of the ethnic cleansing of Gazans by the IDF—duly sanitized, trivialized, normalized by TV News Media narratives. Pres. Biden’s reference to Hamas as ‘the other team’ reveals their mindsets: it’s a game, not a matter of life and death for the 2 million being massacred as we speak. It is tragic that wars win elections in the (so called) democracies of the West.

The Doctrine of ‘Just War’
Prof. Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Aug 2023

Let it be clear that the present author is against war, there being no “but”. War as an institution is an abomination, like slavery and colonialism. The key word is institution, legitimized by social norms and mores. A doctrine of just war is designed to offer a legitimization by seeing the evil of war as something that can be outweighed by possible positive outcomes.

(Italiano) Immanuel Wallerstein su sinistra e destra globali
Johan Galtung | Centro Studi Sereno Regis –TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Jan 2023

Crisi, appunto.

Immanuel Wallerstein on the Global Left and Right
Johan Galtung - TRANSCEND Media Service, 16 Jan 2023

Crisis, indeed. The way out is a new discourse, less material, more spiritual; something to live for, not only from. Right now Wallerstein sees capitalism in crisis with no remedy–of which I am not so sure–and the US hegemony also in a crisis with no remedy–a view I share–, as the fall of an empire for which local elites used to kill and rule; now having to do most killings itself.

We would assume that they will both continue climbing on all dimensions, making themselves heard, but less noisily than the West, Russia and India. Africa is in-between.

(Italiano) Educazione alla pace e geopolitica
Johan Galtung | Centro Studi Sereno Regis – TRANSCEND Media Service, 13 Jul 2020

Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Jul 2020

Foreign Correspondence 50 Years Later: A Preface
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 2 Mar 2020

How do events become news? There are enormities of events happening, at any point of observation, by professional journalists, foreign correspondents or not: how come that some are elevated to the level of news? What is news anyhow? Why this predilection for negative news, something bad–to somebody–happening? Why, but then also why not?

The Doctrine of Just War: Just That, War! (Or more War than Just)
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Feb 2020

War as an institution to resolve conflict is an abomination, like slavery and colonialism as institutions. Occasional war, slavery and colonialism are probably hard to eliminate. But the key word is institution, legitimized by social norms and mores. A doctrine of just war is designed to do exactly that, offer a legitimation, for instance by seeing the evil of war as something that can be outweighed by possible positive consequences.

Faiths, Religions and Peace
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 3 Feb 2020

A cruel choice between a transcendent, fundamentalist God claiming universal validity as the only one, and immanent gods-as-substance, dwelling in all, extending to other groups?  Evidently, the soft side must be strengthened.  The problem is, how? By conscious dialogue, within, not only between the religions.

Peace Studies: Inspiration, Objectives, Achievement
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 2 Dec 2019

Peace appeals to the heart; studies to the brain. Both are needed, indeed indispensable. But equally indispensable is a valid link between brain and heart. And that, in a nutshell, is what peace studies and peace practice are all about.

United States vs Moby Dick
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

A national epos communicates a national ethos. What is the national US ethos communicated by Herman Melville? Man against Nature is one. Man, humans we would say today, is destined to fight Nature. And destined ultimately to win even if by paying heavy prices.

Professionalization in Peace Research
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Oct 2019

The purpose of peace research is to produce intersubjectively communicable and verifiable knowledge according to the general rules of research. Thus, research is incompatible with secrecy, as it has to take place in public space. And one purpose of peace studies is the communication of the findings of peace research, in line with general rules for education, another public space activity.

Peace as a Profession and New Peace Action Roles
Johan Galtung | PRIO Peace Research Institute Oslo – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 Sep 2019

1974 – Today we see relatively clearly that there are liberal and Marxist conceptions of peace, and perhaps we also see more clearly than before that «liberalism vs. Marxism» is a false dichotomy—although we still live under the pressure of the false dichotomies, and particularly in the thinking about peace. Hence, this essay is an effort to try to indicate, at a very simple, common sense level, that both views are fruitful in conceiving of new forms of peace action, and that they in a sense reinforce each other.

Meanwhile, Around the World
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 5 Aug 2019

The United States in America is a rolling agenda. Dark comes up, women come up, dark women come up–and that is more than the sum of the two. Some US citizens travel the world searching for “the old US” may find the US culture at its best outside the US, as the US Way of Life; liberated from the concerns and the violence of making the US also prevail militarily, economically and politically over all others.

Is Peaceful Research Possible? On the Methodology of Peace Research
Prof. Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 1 Jul 2019

The problem to be explored in this paper can be stated very briefly as follows: is peace research necessarily a peaceful activity? More precisely, is there a meaningful distinction between violent and nonviolent methodologies in peace research? And if there is such a distinction, we are immediately led onto more questions: could it be that some methodologies very frequently employed in fact are highly violent?; what would alternative, nonviolent methodologies be like? – and the final, in a sense most fundamental question: does peace research have to be pursued with nonviolent, peaceful methodologies?

October 8-12, 1974 a symposium on “Patterns of Resource Use, Environment and Development Strategies” was convened in Cocoyoc, Mexico by the directors of UN Environment Programme and the UN Conference on Trade and Development. The Rapporteurs were Barbara Ward and Johan Galtung. The Cocoyoc Declaration is reproduced below, with certain sadness: it is as valid today, more than 40 years later. The two directors received a three-feet-long cable, from the US State Department, rejecting the declaration entirely. Signed by Henry Kissinger.

Meanwhile, Around the World: An Overview
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 2 Apr 2019

What is needed is a system where negative, violent relations are changing to neutral or no relations, where neutral or no relations are changing to positive, peaceful relations, and where positive, peaceful relations become even more peaceful and positive. The Octagon World might be one such system. But for this to work, the state system is not sufficient.

Anti Reuter
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Mar 2019

The task of journalists is to mirror reality, empirical reality, not some potential reality desired by some and-or predicted by some. It is not to mediate to change empirical reality in favor a new social reality. The task of journalists mirroring reality would include information about communities handling successfully natural and-or social disasters and how; not only all those that did not.

(Italiano) Un mondo senza uccisioni del (l’Impero) USA?
Johan Galtung | Centro Studi Sereno Regis – TRANSCEND Media Service, 12 Nov 2018

Sta arrivando. E in quanto a US e una pace positiva? Potrebbero meno uccisioni US contribuire anche a quello?

A World without US (Empire) Killing?
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 5 Nov 2018

A world without US killing would be a major contribution to negative peace, to Glenn Paige’s “non-killing world”. His own country with or without death penalty stopping killing all over. It is coming. What about US and positive peace? Could less US killing also contribute to that? It is also coming, as a change in US mentality. There are many signs in that direction recently, as an expression of Washington now seeing the limits to “politics by military means”.
