Why don’t we just bring them all home? What the hell is our Coast Guard doing off the coast of Iran anyway? Who’s protecting New Jersey?

Remembering Carl Sagan on Earth Day
Antonio C. S. Rosa | Editor – TRANSCEND Media Service, 27 Apr 2020

22 Apr 2020 – The excerpt below is from Carl Sagan’s book, Pale Blue Dot, and it was inspired by an image recorded by Voyager-1 on 14 Feb 1990. As the spacecraft was leaving the solar system for its no-return outer-space exploration trip, NASA technicians redirected the camera for a last photo of Planet Earth behind. Voyager was about 6.4 billion kilometers (4 billion miles) away when it captured this unique, historical, unflattering portrait of the world. Among light rays from the Sun, our Earth appears as a tiny, almost invisible point of light 0.12 pixel in size in the beam to the right of the frame. The landmark photo was by Sagan’s request.

Spike-Endowed Global Civilization as COVID-19
Anthony Judge | Laetus in Praesens - TRANSCEND Media Service, 20 Apr 2020

The following argument explores the sense in which the very form of the virus effectively mirrors the nature of global civilization at this time. To an interesting degree it could be asked whether COVID-19 “is” global civilization — or whether global civilization “is” COVID-19. Like it or not, does the coronavirus effectively define the identity of global civilization as humanity has chosen to engender it?

Why the Stock Market Is Healthy as Americans Die from Coronavirus
Jon Schwarz | The Intercept - TRANSCEND Media Service, 20 Apr 2020

12 Apr 2020 – This past week the S&P 500 went up 301 points, or 12 percent, its best performance in 46 years. During the same week, the reported number of Americans killed by Covid-19 went up 11,499, or 161 percent, the coronavirus’s best performance ever. So this seems like a good time to reevaluate our treasured belief that a rising stock market reflects general human flourishing. Consider a few more events that happened this week around the same time as this excited tweet from Donald Trump, who somehow is the president of the United States:

It is a well-financed and deliberate campaign of unprovoked aggression, war crimes and wanton destruction to dominate the world. Without effective deterrence, every nation is at the mercy of U.S. barbarism. More than 39 countries are currently under U.S.-imposed economic sanctions – more than a quarter of the world’s population. To avoid the fate of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria, Iranian leaders should pursue a defensive military strategy by emulating the DPRK’s formidable defence capability model to stop any U.S. acts of terrorism against their nation.
