We Are All Indigenous
Robert C. Koehler | Common Wonders – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 Sep 2019

Can we flip the faux-humanity of Bolsonaro on its head and declare: We want to integrate ourselves into an indigenous global understanding. Doing so involves more than just scientific expertise; it involves transforming our way of life — beyond television, beyond the Internet, beyond domination and exploitation — to an ever-present awareness of the planet we inhabit. Can we set aside our technology and start learning to listen to it?

Imagining Toroidal Life as a Sustainable Alternative
Anthony Judge | Laetus in Praesens – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 Sep 2019

From Globalization to Toroidization or Back to Flatland? Much is made of the fundamental shift in historical perspective from living on a Flat Earth to dwelling on a rotating sphere — a globe revolving around the Sun. The argument here endeavours to clarify the manner in which the toroidal form can be used in support of imaginative insight of strategic relevance — for the individual, if not for the collective.

Protectors of Mauna Kea Are Fighting Colonialism, Not Science
Julianne Tveten | FAIR-Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting – TRANSCEND Media Service, 2 Sep 2019

27 Aug 2019 – Thousands of Native Hawaiians and their supporters have been congregating since July 15 at the base of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano and mountain on the island of Hawaii… While proposals to compromise might appear fair, protectors say, they dismiss the historical context in Hawaii of colonialism and the usurpation of Indigenous land that continues today. Thus, these suggestions elide the stark power asymmetry between historically disenfranchised and marginalized Native Hawaiians and the billion-dollar, state-backed TMT project.

Reconstructing Nonviolence: A New Theory and Action for a Post-Secular Society
Posted by Antonio C. S. Rosa | Editor – TRANSCEND Media Service, 2 Sep 2019

Nonviolent methods of action have been a powerful tool since the early 20th century for social protest and revolutionary social and political change, and there is diffuse awareness that nonviolence is an efficient spontaneous choice of movements, individuals, and whole nations. Yet from a conceptual standpoint, nonviolence struggles to engage with key contemporary political issues: the role of religion in a post-secular world; the crisis of democracy; and the use of supposedly ‘nonviolent techniques’ for violent aims.

Speaking for the Silenced: The Holy Inquisition in Portugal
Richard Zimler | Tikkun – TRANSCEND Media Service, 26 Aug 2019

Prisoners in Inquisitorial prisons who refused to accept Jesus as the Messiah and make a full confession of their Jewish practices would be burnt at the stake in a public ceremony known as an auto-da-fé, meaning act of faith. In 1560, Portugal imposed this same religious dictatorship in Goa, where tens of thousands of converted Hindus and their descendants were arrested and tortured – and hundreds burnt alive – by the Inquisition from 1560 to 1820. The Inquisition was also a diabolically effective money-making scam, since all the assets of its victims were confiscated and given to the Church.

Participatory Evolution
Robert C. Koehler | Common Wonders – TRANSCEND Media Service, 26 Aug 2019

The core paradox of nonviolent protest against such legally sanctioned immoralities is that, if you block a driveway with your body or simply cross a bridge, you’re depending on the humanity of those you confront, who are armed with the weapons they hold or the vehicles they are driving, to keep them from acting on their anger and harming or killing you. Is this not the essence of courage? You are bringing nothing but yourself, empowered solely by the force of moral compassion — the way the world should be — to a confrontational demand for change.

Neoliberalism Has Met Its Match in China
Ellen Brown | Web of Debt – TRANSCEND Media Service, 12 Aug 2019

9 Aug 2019 – America’s chief competitor in the trade war is obviously China, which subsidizes not just worker costs but the costs of its businesses. The government owns 80% of the banks. Typically, if the businesses cannot repay the loans, neither the banks nor the businesses are put into bankruptcy. The non-performing loans are just carried on the books or written off. No private creditors are hurt, since the creditor is the government, and the loans were created on the banks’ books in the first place (following standard banking practice globally).

There are 390 million guns in the U.S., more guns than people. This includes 15-20 million military assault weapons, the kind used in the recent mass killings in El Paso and Dayton.

Neoliberalism, Neofascism & Trumpism – Racist Alliance of Mob & Capital
Dr Gideon Polya | Countercurrents – TRANSCEND Media Service, 12 Aug 2019

4 Aug 2019 – Philosopher Hannah Arendt found common causes of genocidal Western European imperialism on 5 continents and genocidal 20th century fascism as an alliance between the mob and capital, with a commonality in this union of extreme nationalism, lying, rapacity, atrocity-justifying racism and anti-humanism. Today American Trumpism is ferociously anti-intellectual, anti-humanist, nationalist and racist, with genocidal Trump threats to “totally destroy” or “obliterate”.

As India and Pakistan – And America and Iran – Go Toe-To-Toe, Now Is the Time to Recall the Scorched Corpses of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Robert Fisk | The Independent – Microsoft News, 12 Aug 2019

8 Aug 2019 – This week marks only the 74th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Over the past few days, I’ve had to look hard to find a headline about the two Japanese cities. But, especially in the Middle East and what we like to call south-east Asia, we should be remembering these gruesome anniversaries every month. Hiroshima was atomic-bombed 74 years ago on Tuesday; Nagasaki 74 years ago on Friday. Given the extent of the casualty figures, you’d think they’d be unforgettable.

Burning Down the House
Alan Weisman | New York Review of Books – TRANSCEND Media Service, 12 Aug 2019

August 15, 2019 Issue – Environmental writers today have a twofold problem. First, how to overcome readers’ resistance to ever-worsening truths, especially when climate-change denial has turned into a political credo and a highly profitable industry with its own television network. Second, in view of the breathless pace of new discoveries, publishing can barely keep up. I’m not the only writer to wonder whether books are still an appropriate medium to convey the frightening speed of environmental upheaval.

The Paradox of Mortality: Death and Perpetual Denial
Devaleena Kundu | Academia – TRANSCEND Media Service, 12 Aug 2019

Literary discourses often seek to explore the emotional motley experienced by individuals while encountering death and dying. Representations by literary artists offer a virtual space wherein readers partake of the conclusive episode in a character’s lived experience. However, does a reader in the process imagine and accept his/her own cessation? Or does it always have to be an “other” being at whose death we are present as voyeurs? Freud in his 1918 work “Reflections on War and Death” observed: “We cannot, indeed, imagine our own death; whenever we try to do so we find that we survive ourselves as spectators.”
